Oscillatory phenomena in directional solidification

Abstract: We investigate the weakly nonlinear interaction of one-dimensional patterns of a planar solidification front of a binary alloy. In particular we derive coupled Landau equations for the amplitudes of pulsations, traveling waves, and standing waves which are believed to play an important role in the context of rapid solidification, in particular as an explanation of observed banded structures.
