Oryeongsan (Goreisan) Ameliorates Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis

Abstract: Objective Oryeongsan (Goreisan), a formula composed of five herbal medicines, has long been used to treat impairments of the regulation of body fluid homeostasis. Goreisan has been revealed to have antiinflammatory actions and inhibit a water channel, the aquaporin (AQP). We herein report the therapeutic effect of Goreisan on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE in, an animal model of inflammatory demyelinating diseases. Materials and Methods EAE mice immunized with MOG35-55 peptide were divided into… Show more

“…It is used to adjust the body's water balance by inhibiting mainly AQP4 channels and other AQP subtypes [ 11 ]. AQP3, 4, and 5 upregulates chemokine production [ 12 ], and Goreisan has a potent anti-inflammatory effect inhibiting these AQPs [ 13 ]. This anti-inflammatory may have somehow improved orthostatic pain.…”

“…Goreisan (TJ-17) is composed of five herbal components and is used to adjust the water balance of the body by inhibiting mainly aquaporin 4 (AQP4) [ 13 ] channels as well as other AQP subtypes. AQP3, 4, and 5 upregulate chemokine production [ 14 ], and goreisan has a potential anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting AQPs [ 15 ]. Also, there is a glymphatic system in the cranium, which drains inflammatory substances, suppresses inflammation and pain, protects the brain, and prevents brain edema.…”

“…Aquaporin (AQP) is a water channel and is composed of at least 13 types of isoforms. Goreisan strongly inhibits AQP3, AQP4, and AQP5 [ 9 , 10 ]. Interestingly, unlike western diuretics, Goreisan induces an increase of urine volume in an edematous state, but not in a dehydrated state.…”
