A descoberta de ferramentas associadas à metalurgia e carpintaria na Idade do Ferro bretã é relativamente esparsa. Achados do tipo são encontrados em assentamentos, em tesouros ocultados e, às vezes, em cemitérios. Este artigo aborda a deposição de ferramentas, como tenazes, limas, martelos e outros, analisando contextos funerários encontrados em King Harry Lane (Hertfordshire), Whitcombe (Dorset), Rudston e Burton Fleming (East Yorkshire). Baseando-se em discussões prévias sobre a metalurgia e as ferramentas da Idade do Ferro bretã, como os estudos de Ehrenreich, Fell, Giles e Halkon, a pesquisa incorpora casos encontrados no continente, nas regiões francesas da Normandia e Val-d'Oise, onde sepultamentos com ferramentas ocorrem desde o século III a.C.. O artigo busca demonstrar como a deposição de ferramentas se tornou um mecanismo para expressar mensagens poderosas durante os séculos I a.C./d.C. na Grã-Bretanha, particularmente, associado ao gênero masculino.

“…An important site from Normandy is the early mid-La Tène chariot burial from Orval Les Pleines . It is the only unambiguous La Tène chariot burial from Normandy (at Mondeville l’Étoile iron tyre parts were interpreted as a plundered grave; Lepaumier et al 2010, 331). The significance of this burial is that it dates to the period after the main phase of early La Tène chariot burials, thereby making it contemporaneous with the Wetwang Slack examples.…”

The past four decades have been a time of great activity for researchers examining the Iron Age in north-west Europe. Since the 1980s, the scale of archaeological fieldwork has expanded massively and, with it, the quantity of data available to study. Iron Age mortuary data have been one of the main beneficiaries of this. Britain is no exception to this trend, with a number of important discoveries made over the years, thereby improving our understanding of mortuary practices during this period. The situation is comparable for the regions which immediately border Britain: Ireland, northern France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. This paper reviews the current state of research for this part of Europe, contextualising the Iron Age British data within the broader north-west European frame of these neighbouring regions. In so doing, a better understanding of how chronological developments in the British mortuary data relate to those elsewhere is possible. Additionally, these data may inform us of other aspects of past societies, such as population mobility, social structure, and the persistence of ritual practices over time.

This paper concerns the architecture of formal burials from the La Tène period in north-western Gaul and southern Britain. The research focuses on the shape and dimensions of sepulchral pits containing inhumed or burnt human remains, on the different materials used for the internal elements, and the external constructions and structures covering, framing, or marking the burials. The study of these data exposes the preferred choices in the funerary architecture of Gallic and British communities during the last five centuries bc. The results reveal different regional funerary groups within three main cross-Channel zones according to the architectural elements of the graves and the main treatments of the body. The distinct characteristics of these groups highlight their common features and relationships with neighbouring areas of the Continental and Atlantic zones.
