Orthotopic Ovarian Grafts in the Golden Hamster

Abstract: 1. Interstrain orthotopic ovarian homografts have been made between hamsters of two strains, golden and dark-eared albino, maintained at the National Institute for MedicalResearch.2. The golden hamster recipients were sterilized with irradiation directed to the ovaries whilst the rest of the body was shielded with lead.3. Ovaries from albino donors were grafted orthotopically into irradiated golden hamsters which were then paired with albino males. The genetic identification of young from the graft was possibl… Show more

“…Live young have been obtained from fresh and frozen ovarian tissue grafted to orthotopic or heterotopic locations in females (Parrott 1959, 1960, Carroll et al 1990, Gosden et al 1994, Gunasena et al 1997, Baird et al 1999, Candy et al 2000, Salle et al 2002, Snow et al 2002. As grafts at heterotopic locations do not allow spontaneous conception, the oocytes have to be harvested for IVF and embryo transfer.…”

“…The reason for this is unclear. Allo-and autografts at orthotopic sites do, however, respond to endogenous gonadotrophins as they undergo spontaneous ovulation in vivo as evidenced by the presence of corpora lutea in the grafts and birth of live young (Parrott 1959, 1960, Gosden et al 1994, Jenkin et al 1996, Gunasena et al 1997, Candy et al 2000, Salle et al 2002, Petroianu et al 2002.…”

“…Live births have been reported after orthotopic ovarian transplantation in the hamster (Parrott, 1959), mouse (Jones and Krohn, 1960), rabbit (Winston and McClure Browne, 1974) and sheep (Gosden et al, 1994a). In the human there is one report of a live birth after orthotopic transplantation (Morris, 1895), and heterotopic transplantation has been used to restore menstrual cyclicity (Davidson, 1912).…”
