Hypertension is a common and serious problem that is the major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. [1][2][3] Over 70 million people in the US are affected by high blood pressure (BP) that requires treatment, and nearly one-third of the adult population in the US have a BP of ≥140/90mmHg, which is the defined cut-off value for hypertension. 2,4 It is estimated that over 44% of people in Europe are affected by high blood pressure. 5 Studies have shown that there are several risk factors for hypertension, including body mass index (BMI), 6,7 cholesterol, 8 age, 7 family history, 7 gender, 9 race/ethnicity 10 and a sedentary lifestyle. 6,11 Although there are many effective pharmacotherapies available, nearly 35% of patients with hypertension have a form that cannot be controlled by medication. 12,13
