Orthopaedic research in Australia: a bibliographic analysis of the publication rates in the top 15 journals

Abstract: The results of this study demonstrate that the minority (23%) of the publications originating from Australia in the 15 highest-ranking orthopaedic journals were principally authored by either an Australian trained surgeon or a trainee surgeon. A total of 59% of the publications focused on the hip and knee. Sydney was the leading region, followed by Adelaide and Melbourne. These three regions published 76% of all manuscripts identified during the 5-year study period.

There has been some limited data regarding the academic output of other medical cohorts in Australasia, 68 including orthopaedic surgery and general practice. 68 Internationally, there are also several studies investigating publication trends in plastic surgery, otolaryngology and cardiac surgery among other specialties.…”

“…Finally, a decade ago, Rogers issued a ‘call to arms’ for surgeons to move towards research on “ patient- and society-oriented and risk-adjusted outcomes, including cost-effectiveness, quality of life, and functional outcomes ” [ 24 ]. However, Hohman et al [ 25 ] recently found that Australian-trained surgeons or surgical trainees accounted for only a minority of publications originating from Australia in the 15 highest-ranking orthopaedic journals.…”

“…9,10 A recent study has assessed the research produced by orthopaedic surgeons in Australia. 11 To date, no studies have investigated the quantity or impact of research by plastic surgeons in Australia or New Zealand. The introduction of the Australasian Journal of Plastic Surgery serves as an opportunity to celebrate the ongoing contribution of local surgeons to the plastic surgical literature.…”
