The objective of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of profiles of three esteemed journals of orthodontics: The American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJODO), the Angle orthodontist (AO), and collate it with the Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society (JIOS) from 2008 to 2017. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted, where all the issues of JIOS, AO, and AJODO were hand searched from 2008 to 2017 for specifications such as study design, authorship pattern, and area of interest of research. The data were analyzed and recognized with the help of SPSS Version 21.0. Descriptive statistics were performed, and the selected parameters were analyzed with Pearson Chi-square test at 0.5 level significance. Results: A total of 1846 articles from AJODO, 1440 from AO, and 515 articles from JIOS were retrieved. Majority of articles published in AO (93%), AJODO (68.5%), and JIOS (55.3%) were original research. Almost 25.5% of research in AJODO, 25.3% in AO, and 34% in JIOS were related to appliance design and materials used, whereas 61% articles in AJODO, 64.6% in AO, and 52.2% articles in JIOS involved more than three authors. Nearly 92.5% contribution in AJODO, 93.3% in AO, and 96.6% in JIOS were from educational institutes. Conclusion: The publication pattern in all the journals was interestingly similar to each other; most articles published were original research work signifying an increased inclination of researchers toward experimental affirmations.

This work does a systematic comparative evaluation of 2 methods originating from different fields, both dedicated to the problem of curve resolution/unmixing: multivariate curve resolution–alternating least squares (MCR‐ALS) and band‐target entropy minimization (BTEM). The MCR‐ALS factorizes the data matrix into spectral and concentration profiles that satisfy constraints expressing physicochemical knowledge on the analyzed system. The BTEM reconstructs the pure components' spectral profiles as linear combinations of singular vectors that minimize the spectral entropy and contain specific peaks. Both methods were applied to 40 simulated and one real data set. The simulated data were generated from real spectral and concentration profiles that include different types of spectroscopy (mass spectrometry, Raman, and UV‐visible), data structures (random mixtures, images, and reaction system), and noise levels; the real data set was a Raman image of kidney calculus. For most data sets, both methods yielded accurate solutions, with a correlation between reference and resolved profiles >0.99. However, MCR‐ALS (here used with nonnegativity constraint only) was affected by rotational ambiguity in the recovery of spectral profiles coming from systems with high correlation or overlap in the concentration direction, whereas BTEM tended to distort UV‐visible spectra, a kind of measurement far in nature from low entropy conditions. MCR‐ALS solutions were more stable than BTEM to the increase in noise level. This work also explores the possibility of combining the 2 methods by performing them in sequence. The results show that this combination can significantly improve the outcome as compared to either method applied alone.

This CME article outlines the goals of orthognathic surgery, highlighting advances in the field and current controversies. The principles of the sequencing of osteotomies are discussed and literature is reviewed that may assist in decision-making as to maxilla-first versus mandible-first surgery. The emergence of "surgery first," in which surgery precedes orthodontics, is discussed and important parameters for patient candidacy for such a procedure are provided. The emerging standard of virtual surgical planning is described, and a video is provided that walks the reader through a planning session. Soft-tissue considerations are highlighted, especially in the context of osseous genioplasty and fat grafting to the face. The utility of orthognathic surgery in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea is discussed. The reader is provided with the most current data on complications following orthognathic surgery and advice on avoiding such pitfalls. Finally, outcome assessment focusing on the most current trend of patient-reported satisfaction and the psychological impact of orthognathic surgery are discussed.
