Abstract

This study aimed to develop a scale for middle school students' justice tendencies towards peers in the educational environment. In line with the literature review, the sub-scales were defined as follows: treating friends equally and equitably, protecting friends' rights, standing up for what/who is right, taking responsibility for misbehaviour, doing justice to the work at hand, and sharing fairly. The scale is a 5-point Likert-type scale rated as follows: never, rarely, occasionally, often, and always. An item pool was created after the data was collected from students who did not take part in the actual administration of the scale. After receiving the opinions of subject-matter experts and language experts, the items in the item pool were administered to a total of 628 fifth-, sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students from seven different regions of Turkey. During the item analysis, the internal consistency of the scale was analysed using the Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and Cronbach's alpha was found to be .766. This value shows that the scale is very reliable. To analyse the construct validity of the Scale for Students' Justice Tendencies Towards Peers in the Educational Environment, exploratory factor analysis was conducted with 405 students and confirmatory factor analysis was conducted with 223 students. As a result, a valid and reliable scale of 26 items was developed.
