Abstract

Although listening is the basis for other language skills, it has not been adequately studied. This study has been carried out mostly based on the opinions of Turkish teachers about listening periods, which are not emphasized much. In our country, lessons are taught mostly on the basis of listening skills, and the duration of the lessons is determined as 40 minutes in all education levels. However, teaching the lessons at the same time at all levels is an issue that needs to be discussed for students with developmentally different characteristics. The study was carried out in order to predict an average time for secondary school students' listening skills and to determine the types of texts that students prefer to listen more according to grade levels. The study is descriptive and scanning technique was used. A questionnaire developed by the researchers was used as a data collect ion tool. The survey results were analyzed using the SPSS program. In the survey study, 119 teachers were reached. According to the data obtained, the listening intervals were determined as 10-15 minutes in the 5th and 6th grades, and 15-20 minutes in the 7th and 8th grades. In the data obtained in terms of text types, the most preferred text type by students is fable; It was concluded that the 6th, 7th and 8th grades were stories.
