Bu çalışmanın amacı, fen bilimleri dersinde kullanılan eğitsel dijital oyunun, 6. Sınıf öğrencilerin dolaşım sistemi konusundaki akademik başarılarına ve fen öğrenmeye yönelik motivasyonlarına olan etkisini geleneksel öğretim yöntemleri ile karşılaştırmaktır. Çalışmanın amacına uygun olarak dolaşım sistemi hakkında eğitsel dijital oyun geliştirilmiştir. Çalışmada açıklayıcı karma desen kullanılmış; nicel verilerin elde edilmesinde yarı deneysel desen, nitel verilerin elde edilmesinde durum çalışması kullanılmıştır. Nicel veriler, 26 öğrenciden oluşan deney grubu ve 24 öğrenciden oluşan kontrol grubundan toplanmıştır. Başarı testi (15 soru) ve motivasyon ölçeği (32 madde) nicel veri toplama araçlarıdır. Öncelikle nicel veriler toplanmış ve analiz edilmiştir. Nicel analiz sonuçlarına göre nitel veriler toplanmış ve analiz edilmiştir. Nitel veriler, sekiz (dört kız, dört erkek) öğrenci ile yürütülen odak grup görüşmesinden elde edilmiştir ve betimsel analiz ile analiz edilmiştir. Daha sonra tüm veriler birleştirilmiş ve raporlanmıştır. Deney grubu öğrencilerinin akademik başarıları kontrol grubu öğrencilerine göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde yüksek olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca deney grubu öğrencilerinin fen öğrenmeye yönelik özyeterlik, fen öğrenme değeri, başarı amaçları, öğrenme ortamındaki özendiricilik puanlarının ve fen öğrenimine yönelik motivasyonlarının kontrol grubundan istatistiksel olarak anlamlı düzeyde yüksektir. Katılımcılara göre geliştirilen eğitsel dijital oyun eğlenceli ve bilgilendiricidir. Fen bilimleri dersinde farklı konuların öğretiminde ve farklı derslerde eğitsel dijital oyunlar kullanılabilir.

“…For instance, Can (2022) examined the impact of teaching the seventh-grade polygons subject with educational games enriched on math achievement as well as the change in students' attitudes, and came to the conclusion that the use of games in math instruction had no impact on students' attitudes toward the subject after implementation. Similar findings were made by Demir and Bilgin (2021), who discovered that using games to teach arithmetic had little impact on students' views toward the subject. Again, when results relating to attitude were analyzed at the conclusion of the study done by Dönmez, Dönmez, Kolukısa and Yılmaz (2021) utilizing a game-based teaching strategy, no appreciable change in the attitudes of individuals in the experimental-control groups was discovered.…”

The Effect of Teaching Algebraic Expressions with Educational Games on Sixth-Grade Students’ Attitudes towards Mathematics

The aim of this study was to determine effectively teaching acquisitions which algebraic expressions sub-learning take place in algebra learning field to sixth-grade students by using educational games in addition available teaching methods and the student perspectives on the mathematics lesson. The research's study group consisted of 31 sixth graders from two village middle schools in the province of Niğde’s central district. One of the mixed research approaches, exploratory sequential design, was selected since it was better in accordance with the study's objectives. Both groups took the attitude scale as a pre-test before the application. The experimental group was then taught mathematics using educational games, whereas the control group received no intervention and was simply taught using the techniques found in the present curriculum. Both groups were given the attitude scale as a post-test after the application. Qualitative information was acquired by asking the experimental group’s students their opinions of the method after it had been used. Since the collected quantitative data had a normal distribution, comparisons between groups were made using the independent sample t-test, while comparisons within groups were made using the dependent sample t-test. The qualitative data that was collected was analyzed using content analysis. The results of the study showed that employing educational games to teach mathematics significantly changed the attitudes of the experimental group members toward the topic, or, to put it another way, positively impacted them. After taking into account the students’ perceptions of the process, it was determined that the use of educational games during the lesson raised interest, motivated students, increased their participation in the lesson, helped them understand the subject, and the students enjoyed the process.

Effectiveness of using digital and non-digital games in primary mathematics teaching: A meta-analysis study

The current study aims at determining the effect of using games in primary mathematics teaching on academic achievement as well as comparing effect sizes according to the game type. For this purpose, the meta-analysis methodology was used. The data for this study was obtained from 20 studies that were found by searching the determined keywords in databases and met the inclusion criteria. Using these studies, 21 different effect sizes were determined. Only studies conducted in Turkey were included in the study. The random-effects model was used to analyze the data. The effect sizes were calculated as Hedges' g. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis Software was employed for data analysis. According to the findings, the overall effect size of the use of games in primary school mathematics teaching on academic achievement was found to be 0.875 at a large level. When the effect sizes were compared according to the game type, it was determined that digital games had a small (0.436) effect and non-digital games had a large (1.032) effect. The findings show that non-digital games are much more effective on academic achievement than digital games in primary school mathematics teaching. It can be recommended to provide trainings for students and teachers on the effective use of digital games in mathematics teaching, to pay attention to the characteristics of the student and the field while producing the games, and to encourage students to play educational math games designed based on the physical environment.
