Orphan Crops: A Best Fit for Dietary Enrichment and Diversification in Highly Deteriorated Marginal Environments

Abstract: Orphan crops are indigenous and invariably grown by small and marginal farmers under subsistence farming systems. These crops, which are common and widely accepted by local farmers, are highly rich in nutritional profile, good for medicinal purposes, and well adapted to suboptimal growing conditions. However, these crops have suffered neglect and abandonment from the scientific community because of very low or no investments in research and genetic improvement. A plausible reason for this is that these crops a… Show more

“…Currently, there is a renewed interest in using orphan crops, including Q. ilex and other forest trees, for dietary diversification, sustainable food production and, ultimately, to improve nutrition, which is a challenge, especially in marginal areas [ 21 , 22 , 23 ]. Q. ilex fruits are currently undervalued and underexploited compared to other equivalent nuts such as the chestnut ( Castanea sativa Mill.)…”

“…Among the health benefits of cowpea are low glycemic index carbohydrates [90], positive effects on gastrointestinal disorders [112], cardiovascular diseases, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity [113], as well as anti-diabetic [114], anti-cancer [115], anti-inflammatory [116], anti-hypertensive and hypocholesterolemic [117] properties, and positive effects on insomnia, osteomalacia, osteoporosis, anencephaly, rickets, and cardiac health and metabolic wellbeing [17]. Furthermore, consumption of cowpea protein has been linked to reducing plasma low-density lipoprotein [118].…”

“… 17 , 18 Orphan crops are a set of nutritious, tasty, and well-adapted species but, due to wild characteristics, are often unsuited to intensive agriculture. 19 , 20 Orphan crops possess many characteristics and can be a lifesaver to the millions who go to bed hungry every night. 20 Besides, orphan crops served as resource material for agricultural research to further increase the stress tolerance of major food crops and also brought diversity to agriculture.…”
