Ornaments in radiation treatment of cultural heritage: Color and UV–vis spectral changes in irradiated nacres

Abstract: Cultural heritage objects that are radiation treated in order to stop their biodegradation often contain ornamenting materials that cannot be removed. Radiation may produce unwanted changes to such materials. Nacre is a common ornamenting material so this is an attempt to assess the impact of gamma-radiation on its optical properties. Two types of nacre (yellow and white) were obtained from a museum and subjected to different absorbed doses of Co-60 gamma irradiation under the same conditions. The radiation in… Show more

“…Moreover, although no peaks were formed at 750 nm after irradiation, the reflectance of the two lead white samples at 750 nm did not show the same decay as the rest of the visible band. Such an observation further confirms a slight increase in a value and a minor reddening of the two irradiated lead-containing samples [30].…”

“…For calcium carbonate from Baishi and Aladdin, the new signal peak at 400~480 nm after irradiation shows the blueish color shift of the sample, which also matches the decrease in b value [30]. In addition, the unique performance of the two lead-containing samples at 750 nm also appears for the two samples containing calcium carbonate, which corresponds to a slight reddening of the color and an elevated a value [30].…”

“…Los espectros de reflectancia difusa representan la radiación reflejada a distintas longitudes de onda; su forma o perfil es característico de cada color. Además, los espectros de reflectancia pueden convertirse a coordenadas cromáticas como las de CIELAB a través de funciones matemáticas predeterminadas, para la caracterización de su color (Marušić et al, 2016).…”

“…Due to the novelty of the gamma irradiation treatment but also to the complexity and diversity of the constituents of cultural heritage items, the question that always remains to be answered is as follows: “Does the gamma radiation induces a supplementary degradation in the material?”. The subject is debated for numerous and diverse objects of wood [ 3 ], textile [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 ], paper [ 2 , 4 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ], which are ornamented [ 14 ] or with polychromies [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]. It is also known that interventions for saving cultural heritage artefacts should be reversible.…”
