“…Understanding early‐onset anhedonia is an important future direction. As mentioned, anhedonia is rare before adolescence but can occur as early as age 3 (Prabhakar et al., 2022). Preschoolers' odds of having a depression diagnosis are substantially higher when the symptom of anhedonia is present, and children with anhedonia show greater sensitivity to stress (Luby et al., 2004).…”

“…What is known is that Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) has a peak onset in adolescence (Avenevoli, Swendsen, He, Burstein, & Merikangas, 2015) and anhedonia has a high prevalence in adolescents with MDD (i.e., 65%–76%) (Lewinsohn, Petit, Joiner Jr., & Seeley, 2003; Yorbik, Birmaher, Axelson, Williamson, & Ryan, 2004). Anhedonia can occur as early as age 3 (Prabhakar, Nielson, & Stringaris, 2022), and is even observed in community samples of adolescents without a depressive disorder (Stringaris et al., 2015). Furthermore, epidemiological evidence suggests that 58% of adolescents with anhedonia report a depressive disorder later in life (Wilcox & Anthony, 2004).…”

“…Dysfunctions in hedonic processing are seen across a multitude of neuropsychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, substance use disorder, and personality disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 2013;Lambert et al, 2018;Pizzagalli, 2022;Whitton & Pizzagalli, 2022). Additionally, deficits in hedonic processing have been reported in adolescents and children as young as three years old which highlights the need for studies across lifespan development (National Institute of Mental Health, 2023;Prabhakar et a., 2022). To understand dysfunctions in hedonic processing and their potential underlying mechanisms, we need to examine the components involved in normal hedonic processing.…”

“…As discussed in Chapter 1, dysfunction in hedonic processing is seen across a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders, highlighting the need for research into the underlying mechanisms of hedonic processing (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Prabhakar et al, 2022). This chapter explores the effects of a genetic reduction in D1R on both anticipatory and consummatory phases of hedonic processing.…”
