Following an overview of the chronological context of Eritrean-Ethiopian antiquity, and a brief summary of research on the Pre-Aksumite and Aksumite periods, this article presents the results of the archaeological excavations carried out by the author and the Ethiopian Institute of Archaeology at the site of Matara, in Eritrea. Four residential complexes and two religious edifices, including a basilica, have been discovered; they belonged to the Aksumite phase. Tombs and numerous inscriptions attest to long occupation of the site from the Pre-Aksumite period, the underlying levels having not been investigated.

Après un rappel du cadre chronologique de l'antiquité érythréo-éthiopienne, puis un rapide panorama des recherches portant sur le Pré-Aksumite et l'Aksumite, cet article présente les résultats des fouilles archéologiques conduites par l'auteur et l'Institut éthiopien d'archéologie sur le site de Matara, en Érythrée. Quatre complexes résidentiels et deux édifices cultuels, dont une basilique, ont été mis au jour ; ils appartiennent à l'étage aksumite. Des tombeaux et de nombreuses inscriptions attestent une longue occupation du site depuis l'époque pré-aksumite, les niveaux sous-jacents n'ayant été qu'effleurés. Une abondante documentation matérielle a été rassemblée ; des vestiges nombreux ont été mis au jour : substructions d'édifices, sculptures, inscriptions gravées dans la pierre, le métal et la terre cuite, poteries et objets divers, ainsi que monnaies d'or, d'argent et de bronze. Aujourd'hui, la période du i er millénaire avant notre ère au i er millénaire après, cadre de la présente étude, apparaît sous un éclairage nouveau. Habituellement, on divise cette période en deux sur la base d'observations archéologiques et d'études épigraphiques : la période pré-aksumite couvre à peu près le i er millénaire avant notre ère, et la période aksumite (du nom de la fameuse métropole d'Aksum, dans le nord de l'Éthiopie) correspond au i er millénaire de notre ère (plus précisément, la documentation disponible à ce jour ne couvre que six ou sept siècles -du i er au vii e siècle après JC). Au fur et à mesure des découvertes, des subdivisions ont progressivement été introduites dans ces deux grandes périodes ; elles ont parfois fait l'objet de contestations, comme il est normal, car si elles présentent un côté pratique pour déterminer les classements, elles n'en comportent pas moins une part d'artifice 2 .1. État indépendant depuis 1993. 2. R. Fattovich et K. A. Bard (2001), s'appuyant sur leurs recherches à Aksum, proposent la périodisation suivante :Pre-Aksumite Period (ca 700-ca 400 BC) ; Proto-Aksumite Period (ca 400-ca 150 BC) ; Aksumite Period (ca 150 BCca AD 700) ; Post Aksumite Period (après ca AD 700).

The coming of new breeds of cattle and the transhumant interaction of cattle keepers and agriculturalists of the highlands are ideas that have been discussed for some time in the archaeology of the Horn (Clark 1967;1976;1980;Brandt 1984;and Brandt & Carder 1987). The greater Asniara area may provide the substantive archaeological evidence to test the appropriateness of these models of interaction.…”

Eritrea fought a war of liberation for three decades between the early 1960s and 1991. While professional research stagnated because of the war, amateur archaeologists provided the sole source of information for ancient material culture in the country during this era. With the coming of independence in 1993, awareness of the potential value of Eritrea’s heritage resources began to grow, leading to an initiative in 1997 to teach archaeology and heritage management at the University of Asmara.Out of the combined training and research programmes conducted by the University of Asmara have come several major discoveries that change the way that the rise of urbanism is seen in the Horn of Africa. We highlight research showing that between 800 BC and 400 BC the greater Asmara area of Eritrea supported the earliest settled agropastoralist communities known in the highlands of the Horn. These communities pre-date and are contemporaneous with Pre-Aksumite settlements in the highlands of southern Eritrea and northern Ethiopia.
