Creativity, beauty, and willingness-to-pay 2 Contributions of perceived creativity and beauty to willingness-to-pay for design products. ABSTRACTConsumer perception of creativity in design products equivalent in function was measured using global single-item ratings of creativity. The measure was found to have a high level of agreement between raters and have discriminant validity to another aesthetic construct, that of beauty. In two experiments using designer lamps and wrist watches as stimuli, the present study shows how creativity and beauty both positively influence consumer willingness-to-pay for the designed product, but each explains different parts of the variance. The results show that it is essential to develop separate models of creativity and beauty evaluations in consumer psychology, in that they seem to be distinct factors, explaining different parts of the variance in their consequences on willingness to pay.

College art students were videotaped creating original drawings from an array of objects. Judges reliably assessed the creativity of the drawings. Videos of the creation of ten high-and ten low-rated drawings were coded frame-by-frame to quantify the extent to which artists engaged in several categories of activities (selecting objects, selecting media, pausing, drawing objects, drawing other visible elements, and drawing imaginary elements) plus reworking the drawing (erasing and revising). Video coding was used to model how the frequency of each measure varied throughout the sessions. Behaviors were analyzed by hierarchical linear modeling, a regression technique that permits individual-and group-level analyses simultaneously. Analyses revealed substantial individual and group differences in the behavioral trajectories, especially in the drawing measures and in reworking the drawing. The results support a positive association between creativity and opportunistic problem solving strategies, and a negative association between creativity and the pre-planned application of default problem representations.

How do creators evaluate works-in-progress to guide them to successful completion? To study this process, artist and nonartist raters assessed in-progress states of high-and low-quality emerging artworks. States were presented sequentially, as a methodological variant to previous research using random order presentation. Results for nonartists replicated earlier findings of a reliahly shallower slope for the quality trajectories of high-quality drawings, as defined by artists. Results for artists were more complex: ratings ' of artists with different aesthetic judgment criteria were examined separately. Artists not valuing abstraction showed mostly similar results as nonartist raters. Inconsistent with earlier findings, abstraction-valuing showed no difference in high-versus low-quality drawings' trajectory slopes. Analyses of time-quality correlations for individual raters suggest abstraction-valuing artists gave lower ratings to later stages of low-quality drawings, producing null effects for slope. This implies that although sequential presentation may be more ecologically valid, random presentation yields results which allow better inferences as to the differences in the creative process.
