Original article Promising anticancer activity of lavender (Lavandulaangustifolia Mill.) essential oil through induction of both apoptosis and necrosis

Abstract: In the current study, potential anticancer and antiproliferative activity of EOs from lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) were determined against A549, H1299, C6 cancer cells and nontumorous HUVEC cells through induction of both apoptosis and necrosis. Furthermore, the differentiations of the cancer prevention activities of the EOs distilled from first and second year's harvest of the lavender growing under traditional system and plastic mulch were investigated using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphen… Show more

“…Previous investigations on L. angustifolia EO have reported cytotoxic activity on different cancer cell lines, with EC 50 values of 80.62 ± 1.04 µg/mL on Hela cells and 88.90 ± 1.71 µg/mL on A549, confirming the high cytotoxic properties of the EOs from the Lamiaceae family on cancer cells, as observed in our results [9]. Gezici [27] determined that the cell growth and cell viability in three different cancer cell lines (A549, H1299, and C6) were affected by lavender (L. angustifolia Mill.) EOs at a low concentration and with minimum exposure time.…”

“…The A549 and HeLa cancer cells were cultured on Roswell Park Memorial Institute Medium (RPMI, ThermoFisher Scientific), and the other cells were grown in Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (DMEM): Ham's F12 nutrient medium (1:1) (ThermoFisher Scientific) in the flasks at 37°C in a humidified CO 2 (5%) incubator. The cell growing conditions and supplements were used as same described in our previous publications Gezici, 2018;. In order to determine anticancer activities of the turmeric extracts, MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay was performed as described by Mosmann (1983) 29 with minor modifications.…”
