ORIGINAL ARTICLE: Gender Dichotomy in Antibody Response in a T‐Cell Lymphoma: Involvement of IL‐13 and Gonadal Hormones

Abstract: It can be concluded that IL-13, in concert with gonadal hormones, differentially modulates the B-cell function in a tumor-bearing host.

“…Altogether, results indicate that DL cell progression as well as IL‐13 pretreatment results into massive polarization of CD4 + T cell population in lymphoid organs of antigen‐challenged mice. The increase in the CD4 + T cell population in DL‐bearing host is corroborative of the observations that report the Th2 biasness in the tumour‐bearing host [23–25].…”

“…IL‐13 has been known to induce the differentiation and expansion of Treg cells which results in cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of Th1 cells and contribute the expansion of Th2 type of cells in peripheral lymphoid organs [35]. Moreover, IL‐13 treatment was previously found by us to strongly modulate B cell antibody class‐switching and specifically enhanced the production of IgM and IgG2b compared with ag‐specific IgG1 and IgG3 in the antigen‐challenged DL‐bearing mice, which is further suggestive of strong Th2 polarization in the tumour‐bearing host [25]. Compared with previous observation, it can be concluded that there is increase in the Th2 type cells in the lymphoid organs with a concomitant decrease in the Th1 type of cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes in the DL‐bearing host.…”

“…Little weight can be given to the variation between dolphin C and the other three cohort dolphins because of the limited number of normal samples remaining. However, it is interesting to note that IL-4, IL-13 and IL-12 are increased in females of various species [ 40 42 ]. Furthermore, the two samples from the female E with acute pulmonary disease trend more like the female dolphin C for IL-4 and IL-12p40 MSCGT than the three male dolphins ( Fig 5H and 5K ).…”
