Origin of Radiation-Induced Darkening in Yb3+/Al3+/P5+-Doped Silica Glasses: Effect of the P/Al Ratio

Abstract: Yb/Al/P-co-doped silica glasses with different P/Al ratios were prepared using the sol-gel method combined with high-temperature sintering. The evolution of composition-dependent color centers caused by X-ray irradiation in these glasses was correlated with their structural changes, which are controlled by the P/Al ratio. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Raman spectra have been used to characterize the glass network structure, and advanced pulse electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) has been employed to st… Show more

“…As previously reported, X‐ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) indicates that oxygen atoms fully occupy the first coordination shell of Yb 3+ ions in Yb 3+ /Al 3+ co‐doped silica glass . The absence of oxygen signals in APLx glasses is due to their extremely low natural abundance (∼0.038%) …”

“…1). Clear evidences were given for the formation of Yb 2+ ions in Yb-doped silica under ionizing irradiation [6,11,40,42]. In this case however, free electron-hole pairs are generated across the bandgap and Yb 2+ ions are no longer created by CT.…”
