Calcite cement is a common diagenetic mineral in carbonate rocks and plays an important role on rock quality as hydrocarbon reservoirs. Traditionally, oxygen isotopic compositions (δ18O) of the diagenetic calcites tend to decrease with increasing depths due to temperature-dependent isotope fractionation. In this study, the stable isotope compositions of the calcite cements in the Changxing and Feixianguan formations from the Puguang, Yuanba, Jiannan and Fuling carbonate fields in the Sichuan Basin were analyzed. The results show that some calcite cements have δ18O values similar to those of their host carbonates, despite the fact that these calcites formed at elevated temperatures (>∼100°C). Based on petrographic and geochemical analyses, the 18O-enriched calcites commonly occur with solid bitumens and have lower δ13C values compared with host rocks, suggesting thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR) provided organic carbon for these calcite precipitation. During TSR, thermal oxidation of hydrocarbons generated the light carbon, and simultaneously the reduced sulfate ions provided the oxygen. Comparison of our study with the TSR calcites worldwide, a model for oxygen isotope behavior during TSR was established. Oxygen isotope compositions of TSR-related calcites are a function of isotope compositions and amounts of the initial anhydrite and pore waters. TSR shows two opposing effects on the δ18O values of calcites, depending on the δ18O ratios of the initial anhydrite. The reduction of anhydrite with relatively low δ18O values causes the calcite δ18O lower than theoretical values of calcites directly precipitated from pore waters. The heavy δ18O ratios of calcites formed during TSR are not only attributed to the 18O-enriched pore water resulting from extensive water-rock interaction, but also probably due to the involvement of anhydrite with high δ18O values.

The high‐quality hydrocarbon source rocks developed in the Longtan Formation of the Qijiang area and the good reservoir capacity of the overlying dolomite of the Jialingjiang Formation indicate that the area has great exploration potential. To clarify the hydrocarbon migration and accumulation characteristics of the area, the fluid potential of the Longtan Formation in the Qijiang area in the Early Jurassic was determined. The direction of the maximum negative gradient of the fluid potential indicates the direction of the primary migration of hydrocarbons, and the structural ridge theory is used to analyse the direction of the secondary migration of hydrocarbons. The results show that the fluid potential of the hydrocarbon source rocks of the Longtan Formation in the Early Jurassic is characterized by the alternate distribution of high potential zones and low‐potential zones. The central syncline, eastern syncline and western syncline are drainage zones and high potential zones, while the Shiyougou structural belt and Fo'er Ya structural belt are supply zones and low‐potential zones. The oil and gas fluids migrate from the east–west direction to the anticlinal zone for the primary migration; the structural ridge controls the secondary migration of oil and gas in the low‐potential area along the north–south direction, resulting in a zonal distribution of oil and gas traps along the structural ridge. By combining fluid potential and structural ridge characteristics to determine the dominant direction of primary and secondary hydrocarbon migration, a model of hydrocarbon migration and accumulation in the Qijiang area is developed, which provides an important basis for finding hydrocarbon reservoirs.

China is facing a number of challenges, such as environmental pollution, energy security, and slowing down of economic growth. China's total energy consumption has been leading the worldwide consumption for several years. China's annual primary energy consumption accounts for more than 90% of total energy consumption, and the country's utilization of wind energy, solar energy, biomass energy, and other new form of energy remains very low. This research has adopted a strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat (SWOT) analysis approach to examine the internal and external factors that affect the competitiveness of the energy industry in China. An extensive and critical review of a wide range of literature was conducted, including academic papers, industry reports, statistical data, relevant regulations, and policy documents. Eighteen factors were identified from the literature review. These factors form part of an integrated framework that provides a useful tool for policy makers and the industry to gain a better understanding of the factors that affect the sustainable development of the Chinese energy industry. The results also provide a useful reference for foreign firms that intend to explore the Chinese energy industry market.
