Origin of a function by tandem gene duplication limits the evolutionary capability of its sister copy

Abstract: The most remarkable outcome of a gene duplication event is the evolution of a novel function. Little information exists on how the rise of a novel function affects the evolution of its paralogous sister gene copy, however. We studied the evolution of the feminizer (fem) gene from which the gene complementary sex determiner (csd) recently derived by tandem duplication within the honey bee (Apis) lineage. Previous studies showed that fem retained its sex determination function, whereas the rise of csd establishe… Show more

“…Taken together, these findings suggest that tandem gene duplication contributes to trait diversity while retaining stronger domain conservation than expanded gene families. This difference might reflect stronger evolutionary constraints 30 , gene conversion 31 or simply younger age. Our study underscores how the comparison of high quality, annotated genomes and developmentally targeted transcriptomes between closely related species with high genetic tractability can establish causal links between genotypic and phenotypic variation above the species level 29 .…”

“…The hypervariable region is thought to play a role in the recognition process of allelic differences. Six single nucleotide replacement changes in the ancestral progenitor gene formed a novel coiled coil motif in the csd gene [Hasselmann et al, 2008a[Hasselmann et al, , 2010. The recent evolutionary origin of the csd gene in honeybees has allowed identifying signatures of selection [Hasselmann et al, 2008a[Hasselmann et al, , 2010.…”

“…3a). This analysis was limited to 52 gene pairs due to the occurrence of tandem duplication after retroposition events (Hasselmann et al 2010). The vast majority of the remaining 52 gene pairs (46) showed expression during different stages, indicated by the FPKM higher than the background level 0.42 (Supplementary Table 5).…”
