Origin and history of grasslands in Central Europe – a review

Abstract: In terms of origin, grasslands in Central Europe can be classified into (i) natural grasslands, predetermined by environmental conditions and wild herbivores; (ii) seminatural grasslands, associated with long-term human activity from the beginning of agriculture during the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition; and (iii) improved (intensive) grasslands, a product of modern agriculture based on sown and highly productive forage grasses and legumes. This review discusses the origin, history and development of grasslan… Show more

“…Influence of altitude on biodiversity is of common nature and concerned different groups of organisms (Sergio and Pedrini, 2007). Grasslands as semi-natural communities arose in the place of forest and are dependent on mowing or grazing to stop the succession process (Szydłowska, 2010;Hejcman et al, 2013;Tälle et al, 2015). For their existence, apart from suitable soil and climate conditions, diaspores of grassland species must appear.…”

“…It is one of the earliest observations in the history of grassland management that nutrients such as N, P and K are most important for productivity and species assembly on grassland (Hejcman et al 2013). From functional ecology research, we understand that soil nutrients represent a filter which affect the ecological niche dimension and modify the set of species (Harpole and Tilman 2007).…”

“…Grasslands are vital elements of the European landscape [3,4], they have traditionally been managed by grazing and mowing for centuries [5][6][7]. Grasslands also deliver essential ecosystem services such as erosion protection, groundwater recharge, carbon sequestration, and recreation [8].…”
