Origanum majorana Attenuates Nephrotoxicity of Cisplatin Anticancer Drug through Ameliorating Oxidative Stress

Abstract: Despite the fact that cisplatin is an important anticancer drug, its clinical utilization is limited by nephrotoxicity during long term medication. Combined cisplatin chemotherapy with plant extracts can diminish toxicity and enhance the antitumor efficacy of the drug. This study evaluated the effect of Originum majorana ethanolic extract (OMEE) on cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Eighteen male rats were divided into three groups as follows: a control group, a group treated with cisplatin (3 mg/kg body weight… Show more

“…The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect of Origanum majorana extracts proved in the present study agreed with the work of Soliman et al (2016). Carnosic acid, a highly labile diterpene phenol with a structure similar to rosmarinic acid in addition to its derivative carnosol, that are present in Origanum majorana, both have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.…”

“…Aβ, present in Al-animal model of ALD as well as in AD patients, induces the production of hydrogen peroxide, lipid peroxide and superoxide in neurons that contribute in the formation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Oxidative stress could promote AD by stimulating macroautophagy of Aβ that may further induce cell death by destabilizing lysosomal membranes (Swomley et al, 2014;Prema et al, 2016). Al induces apoptosis in hippocampus and cortex mainly by the down regulation of anti-apoptotic mediators and upregulation of pro-apoptotic factors (Chaudhary et al, 2014).…”

“…Previous phytochemical and pharmaceutical studies on this species have resulted in the isolation of phenolic compounds, which are responsible for antioxidant and anticancer activities. [36] Recent works on Origanum species exhibited a wide range of biological activities such as antimicrobial, [37] anticancer, [38] antioxidant, [39] antidiabetes, [40] antibacterial, [41] antifungal, [42] antinociceptive, [43] and antilipase [44] properties. Although extensive knowledge on the chemical composition of essential oil on Origanum species is available, the antioxidative activity of secondary metabolites isolated from Origanum minutiflorum O. Schwarz & P.H has not been investigated previously.…”
