Oriented Nanostructures from Single Molecules of a Semiconducting Polymer:  Polarization Evidence for Highly Aligned Intramolecular Geometries

Abstract: We report the observation of uniformly oriented transition moments perpendicular to the support substrate in single molecules of a conjugated polymer (MEH-PPV) isolated by ink-jet printing techniques. Fluorescence imaging combined with atomic force microscopy and polarization modulation studies, supported by molecular mechanics simulation, provides compelling evidence of polymer nanoparticle (single-molecule) structures with an extraordinary degree of intramolecular order. This is a general technique for prepa… Show more

“…This incredible improvement was also reported in our previous articles that describe the details of the experimental measurements and observations [2,34,35]. Similar results have also been found for MEH-PPV but typical quantum yields of z-oriented single molecule nanoparticles of MEH-PPV are <0.5.…”

“…We have used ink-jet printing methods to isolate single conducting polymer chains in microdroplets in various organic solvents (tetrahydrofuran (THF), toluene, etc) typically less than 5 µm initial diameter [34,35]. The droplets evaporate en route to the coverglass substrate thus allowing self-organization of the polymer chain in the absence of host polymer or substrate interactions (see figure 1 for a schematic).…”

“…Fitting of the pattern provides the polar angles of the dipole orientation. Th is method has been used successfully to confi rm the perpendicular orientation with respect to the substrate of ordered MEH-PPV nanoparticles [18]. Alternatively, in samples with limited degrees of freedom, such as rod-like MEH-PPV chains in a nematic liquid crystal, the orientation can be monitored simply by measuring the degree of fl uorescence anisotropy [19].…”

“…In this case, a slight helicity can be seen owing to the steric interactions of the alkyl side groups. 35 The helix conformation decreases the degree of molecular planarity of the polymer p-conjugated backbone, leading to a blue shifted spectrum.…”
