Oriented growth of the functionalized metal–organic framework CAU-1 on –OH- and –COOH-terminated self-assembled monolayers

Abstract: The oriented growth of the amino-functionalized metal-organic framework [Al4(OH)2(OCH3)4(H2N-bdc)3].xH2O (named CAU-1; CAU = Christian-Albrechts-University) on different self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is reported. Gold substrates were modified with both 16-mercaptohexadecanol and 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid SAMs and immersed in a pre-treated crystallization solution. The different terminal functionalities and synthesis parameters result in the direct surface growth of CAU-1 crystals along preferred crystall… Show more

“…Compared to the HKUST-1 BS, the CAU-1-NH 2 BS shows a significantly larger shift at low vapor pressures for both sorptives. The shape of the ethanol sorption isotherm for TiO 2 /CAU-1-NH 2 is in good agreement with the isotherm of CAU-1 thin films on QCM gold electrodes, 53 which is indicative of a MOF-dominated sensing performance of the BS. Both isotherms for TiO 2 /CAU-1-NH 2 and TiO 2 /HKUST-1 exhibit continuously increasing curves at p/p 0 > 0.1, consistent with the presence of a comparatively high fraction of textural porosity.…”

“…[113] Later it was demonstrated by Bein and coworkers that by using a proper type of MOF, an oriented deposition of the MOF crystallites could be achieved. [114][115][116] A major breakthrough became possible when a layer-by-layer or quasi-epitaxial deposition method was introduced, which allowed to grow highly ordered, oriented thin films of uniform thickness. [108,109,[117][118][119] With regard to interfacial systems chemistry these well-defined highly porous networks offer huge potential because they allow one to combine the potential of metal organic frameworks, or MOFs, as demonstrated in the bulk, [120][121][122] with the particular opportunities arising from a deposition on surfaces.…”

“…Different Al-MOFs have been obtained as thin layers [139,142,143] and as membranes [144][145][146][147][148][149][150]. Especially the mesostructuring of such membranes has been demonstrated for Al-based MOFs.…”
