The notion of "deontic rights"-the capacity of an individual to determine action-is described as a tool to analyze human power plays in the turn-by-turn unfolding of social interaction. Drawing on various bodies of literature, the paper portrays the organization of the adjacency-pair sequence as the key locus of negotiation over deontic rights. How such negotiations happen in practice is also considered. Two deontic patterns instantiating themselves in sequential relations-deontic congruence and deontic incongruence-are discussed. Negotiations of deontic rights are suggested to take place specifically in and through three different forms of deontic incongruence, each of which involves a subtle mismatch between the claims of deontic rights of the first speaker and the recipient's treatment of these claims. These implicit power plays easily escape the eye and are therefore difficult to reflect upon and counteract by the participants themselves, which makes a thorough understanding of these mechanisms important.KEYWORDS authority, conversation analysis, deontics, power, sequentialityThis is an open access article under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.

Intersubjectivity is a concept central to human interaction, broadly understood as the sharing of minds. There is a rich diversity of conceptualizations of intersubjectivity, but detailed operationalization for its component processes in social interactions are scarce. We propose a novel approach to examine detailed variation in intersubjectivity in interaction. Our approach combines two previously formulated frameworks: the hierarchically organized developmental levels of intersubjectivity put forth in the field of developmental psychology, and three domains or orders of social interaction - affect, deontics, and epistemics - discussed in conversation analytic research literature. The interdisciplinary integration of these two frameworks allows a more crystallized view of intersubjectivity, which will benefit our understanding of the fine-scale social interaction processes as they vary in the course of the moment-to-moment unfolding of social action, across different stages of human social development, and between individuals belonging to different clinical groups and even to different species.

Artikkelissa tarkastelen päätöksentekoa monikulttuurisilla lääkärin vastaanotoilla, joissa joko lääkäri tai potilas on maahanmuuttaja eikä puhu suomea äidinkielenään. Tavoitteenani on analysoida päätöksentekokeskustelun kielellisiä ja vuorovaikutuksellisia yksityiskohtia ja pohtia sitä kautta potilaan osallistumista ja osallistumismahdollisuuksia. Aineistonani on 36 videoitua yleislääkärin vastaanottoa, joista puolessa maahanmuuttajaosapuoli on potilas ja puolessa lääkäri. Metodini ovat keskustelunanalyysi ja vuorovaikutuslingvistiikka. Analysoin ensin niin sanottuja päätösaloitteita, joilla päätös tuodaan ensimmäisen kerran keskusteluun ja keskusteltavaksi. Lääkärien päätösaloitteet voi järjestää niiden implikoiman päätösvallanmukaisesti seuraavasti: velvoitukset, kehotukset, toteamukset, luvat, suositukset, tarjoukset, ehdotukset ja kysymykset. Suomea äidinkielenään puhuvat lääkärit ja ulkomaalaistaustaiset lääkärit eroavat toisistaan päätösaloitteiden käytössä: ulkomaalaistaustaiset lääkärit käyttävät enemmän velvoittavia ja vähemmän tarjoavia ja ehdottavia aloitteita. Ulkomaalaistaustaisten lääkärin päätösaloitevalikoima näyttää siis olevan jokseenkin autoritaarisempi kuin suomea äidinkielenään puhuvien. Toiseksi tarkastelen, miten päätösaloitteisiin vastataan ja millaisia neuvotteluja päätöksentekokeskustelussa syntyy. Tulokset osoittavat, että potilaat voivat kieli- ja kulttuurierosta huolimatta ilmaista vastarintaa ja neuvotella päätöksistä. Lisäksi potilaat tekevät oma-aloitteisia pyyntöjä ja ehdotuksia lääkärille. Tulokset eivät tarkoita, etteivät kieli- ja kulttuurierot voisi vaikuttaa päätöksentekokeskusteluun, mutta ne antavat syyn uskoa, etteivät ne väistämättä heikennä potilaan asemaa. Artikkeli tarjoaa uusia näkökulmia potilaskeskeiseen päätöksentekoon ja voi toimia virikkeenä lääkäri–potilas-vuorovaikutuksen kehittämiselle.
