Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) and Ambient Intelligence (AmI) try to achieve a future where technology surrounds the users and helps them in their daily lives. In this sense, the urgent need of solutions to cover the rapid increase of the elderly population with chronic diseases led to the increase of projects related with AAL and AmI. During the latest years, several projects have been proposed to tackle different medical problems, some building devices and others services. This paper presents iGenda and its evolution, the UserAccess, with the main objective of developing an AAL platform. It features an analysis of the latest developments and points future directions for the work. These projects display the importance of the interoperability of the platforms, demonstrating a case study for AAL development.

Abstract. Technology is present in almost every simple aspect of the people's daily life. As an instance, let us refer to the smartphone. This device is usually equipped with a GPS module which may be used as an orientation system, if it carries the right functionalities. The problem is that these applications may be complex to operate and may not be within the bounds of everybody.Therefore, the main goal here is to develop an orientation system that may help people with cognitive disabilities in their day-to-day journeys, when the caregivers are absent. On the other hand, to keep paid helpers aware of the current location of the disable people, it will be also considered a localization system. Knowing their current locations, caregivers may engage in others activities without neglecting their prime work, and, at the same time, turning people with cognitive disabilities more independent.

In order to suppress the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) limitation to track persons in indoor or in dense environments, a pedestrian inertial navigation system can be used. However, this type of systems have huge location estimation errors due to the Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) characteristics and the use of low-cost inertial sensors. To suppress some of these errors we propose a system that uses several sensors spread in person's body combined with information fusion techniques. Information fusion techniques provide lighter algorithms implementations, to count and classify the type of step, to run in mobile devices. Thus, improving pedestrian inertial navigation systems accuracy.
