Orientation of embedded Y 2 BaCuO 5 particles within the YBa 2 Cu 3 O x matrix in melt‐textured YBCO superconductors

Abstract: Automated electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) was employed to study the local orientations of embedded Y 2 BaCuO 5 (Y-211) particles within the YBa 2 Cu 3 O x (Y-123) superconducting matrix of large grain, melt-textured Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) samples. High-quality Kikuchi patterns were obtained, enabling automated mapping of the individual crystal orientations and a two-phase analysis of the samples. Investigations were performed on a variety of melt-textured YBCO samples, including samples with different elemen… Show more

“…Here, the Y-123 phase has a dominating (001) direction, but also a large amount of (010)-oriented areas are present. Some orientations of the Y-211 phase produce misorientations in the Y-123 matrix, which was also observed earlier [11]. Sample (3) contains a large amount of Y-211 particles, including a large number of small particles with sizes around 500 nm.…”

“…[1,2], and the study of interfaces, especially grain boundaries [3,4]. It is also possible to distinguish between different previously selected crystallographic phases, see for example [5,6]. A further advantage is the high lateral resolution of up to 6 nm, which, in this case, could be achieved for a thin platinum film deposited on silicon [7].…”
