Orientation analysis of uniaxially drawn polycarbonate films, doped with fluorescent molecules, by UV-dichroism, fluorescence polarization and birefringence

Abstract: Bis-phenol-A-polycarbonate (PC) is dyed in solution with fluorescent molecules of different shapes and cast to films. Rectangular samples, cut from these films, are drawn varying draw ratio and drawing temperature. The orientation of the fluorescent probes is investigated by dichroism and fluorescence polarization, that of the polymer segments by birefringence. Hermans' orientation factors obtained by dichroism and fluorescence polarization are in good agreement. Long rodlike fluorescent molecules exhibit grea… Show more

“…With increasing elongation of the film, the dye molecules orient more parallel to the elongation direction. This is interpreted as a steric interaction between the dye molecules and the polymer matrix, which causes the alignment of the rod-like dye molecules preferentially parallel to the stretched polymer chains. ,, The distribution of orientation angles φ is shown in Figure c,d. The average orientation is initially ⟨φ⟩ = 46.3° and changes during the elongation to ⟨φ⟩ = 24.8°.…”

“…From An-neglecting form birefringence and making assumptions as detailed in [3]-the second moment of segmental orientation distribution (cos20s)DB or Hermans's orientation factor Ix ((COS20s)DB) can be obtained, if the intrinsic birefringence Ano is known:…”

“…Previous papers of the authors [1][2][3] have dealt with the orientation of fluorescent molecules embedded in uniaxially drawn polyvinylchloride and polycarbonate films. The present work renders an investigation into the orientation of fluorescent molecules of the same class within polystyrene films.…”
