Oribatid Mites (Arachnida: Acari: Oribatida) from the Marine Littoral of the Ryukyu Archipelago, Southwestern Japan

Abstract: A new genus, three new species, and three known species of oribatid mite are described firom the marine littoral of the Ryukyu Arehipelago, southwestern Japan. These taxa are Arotrobates granutatus Luxton, 1992, Rhizophobates shimojanai gen. nov. and sp. nov., Schusteria nagisa sp. nov,, S. saxea sp. nov., Atismobates reticutatus Luxton, 1992, and Fortaynia rotunda Marshall and Pugh, 2oo2. Two Afirican species of thc genus Schusteria, S.

“…Based on molecular genetic data, Indopacifica forms a well‐supported single clade, and hence, 18S ribosomal RNA sequences clearly confirm the distinctness of the new genus and place it close to Thalassozetes shimojanai (Karasawa & Aoki, ). The latter was originally described as Rhizophobates shimojanai (Karasawa & Aoki, ) but was later transferred to Thalassozetes Schuster, 1963 without any justification (Subías, ). Unfortunately, Iseki and Karasawa () adopted this invalid classification and the available DNA sequence was saved in GenBank under the wrong name.…”

“…In the following paragraph, the new taxon will be compared to each selenoribatid genus to justify the erection of this new genus on a morphological basis (for a tabular overview see Table 4). (Karasawa & Aoki, 2005). The latter was originally described as Rhizophobates shimojanai (Karasawa & Aoki, 2005) but was later transferred to Thalassozetes Schuster, 1963 without any justification (Subías, 2004).…”

“…For a long time most studies on these two taxa were limited to species descriptions or records, mainly from the Indo-Pacific region (e.g. Luxton 1992, Karasawa & Aoki 2005, Bayartogtokh et al 2009). Only during the last two decades research focused on other topics, such as ecology, dispersal and reproduction (e.g.…”

“…Rhizophobates and Schusteria have been subject to taxonomic debates (e.g. Karasawa and Aoki 2005, Pfingstl and Schuster 2012) and the discreteness of some members of these genera is still unclear. The other genera are yet well delimited and the same applies to the genus type Selenoribates .…”
