Organotin-bridged ionic liquid as a solvent-free, leaching-resistive catalyst for ring opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone

Abstract: An easy synthesis provides a monoalkyltin trichloride grafted onto an ionic liquid. The catalyst paves the way to nontoxic biologically relevant materials.

“…The result is a functionalized-metal-containing IL (MIL) with high catalytic activity, where the metal atom can be incorporated by the anion while the cation is, e.g., a catalytically active imidazolium ring. 27 These MILs have demonstrated their efficacy as catalysts/initiators for ring-opening polymerization (ROP) reactions of lactones [28][29][30] and epoxides. 31 Furthermore, the utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) incorporating ILs has emerged as a promising strategy for the preparation of recyclable porous catalysts employed in the CO 2 cycloaddition to epoxide.…”

“…[14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22] Organometallic complexes composed of tin, aluminum, and zinc are mainly used as catalysts for coordination ROP. [23][24][25][26][27] Complexes consisting of some of the alkaline-earth metals and rare-earth metals are also used in common for coordination ROP. [28][29][30][31] Tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate (Sn(Oct) 2 ), which is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is the most widely used catalyst for the ROP of lactones.…”

“…Raghavendra et al [7] used Mg complex/benzamidine initiator for the polymerization of CL by the ROP method. Similarly, other systems like Al complex/indole [8], dialkly Al complex/butanol [9], Sn complex/R-OH [10], MX/ROH [11], Lanthanam complex/BH 4 [12], t-BuBoran/1-pyrenebutanol [13], tris(penta uoro) Borane/benzyl alcohol [14] and Uranium complex/imidazoline [15] were employed as an initiator cum catalyst towards the ROP of CL. In 2016, Scrivanti et al [16] studied the ROP of CL in the presence of the Lanthanam complex as a catalyst and acid as a chemical initiator.…”
