Organophosphorus pesticides toxicity on brine shrimp artemia

Abstract: Present investigation discusses the toxic effects of two organophosphorus pesticides (Malathion) and (Glyphosate) on brine shrimp, Artemia in static acute toxicity tests (24hr and 48hr). Toxicity tests were performed at a temperature of 27±1⁰C with a photoperiod of 12h light and 12h dark. Ten healthy nauplii were exposed to five different concentrations of Malathion (10, 20, 40, 60 and 80 ppm) and Glyphosate (0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05 ppm) along with a control group. Finney's Probit analysis was used to … Show more

“…Up to now Artemia sp. has been widely used to test fungal toxins (Harwig and Scott, 1971), plant extract toxicity (Meyer et al, 1982), heavy metals (Martı́nez et al, 1999;Sarabia et al, 2008), cyanobacteria toxins (Jaki et al, 1999;Tokodi et al, 2018) and pesticides (Comeche et al, 2017;Gambardella et al, 2018;Jawahar et al, 2018). Artemia sp.…”

“…At a concentration of 28 µg•L −1 , 90% mortality of the tested organisms was observed. The same concentration of Roundup ® converted to glyphosate, i.e., 28 µg•L −1 caused 50% mortality of test organisms after 24 h, and after 48 h the LC 50 value was 19 µg•L −1 [104]. Our results show that Kaput ® Premium herbicide has very similar LC 50 value as Roundup ® Classic Pro, namely 19 µg•L −1 .…”

“…The higher values observed in our experiment indicate that these two compounds (i.e., 2c and 4c ) have lower acute toxicity than bisphenol A or SDS. For organo-phosphoric compounds, such as malathion, LC 50 values of 1 to 17 mg/L were determined at 48 h, whereas for glyphosate LC 50 point estimates were lower than 1 mg/L [ 44 ]. To conclude, most of the compounds synthesized and evaluated in this paper were devoid of toxicity on Artemia nauplii, and the only two that manifested some toxicity seemed to be less toxic than those used widely in industrial compounds such as bisphenol A or SDS.…”
