The banana weevil (Cosmopolites sordidus) is an important pest of bananas (Musaceae: Musa species) in South Africa. Adult trapping methods were compared in field trials using a randomised block design. Pseudostem traps, pitfall traps containing a pheromone (either Cosmolure Õ (Pheromone A) or Cosmolure+ Õ (Pheromone B)), and unbaited pitfall traps (control), were compared over 5 weeks during all seasons along the Southeast coast of South Africa. Pseudostem traps treated with an insecticide, and rhizome traps, were included as additional treatments in autumn. In summer two treatments were also added: individual suspension of both pheromones above a pitfall trap either in combination with or without a pseudostem trap. The adult beetles were sexed, and the number of internal eggs noted. Pheromone A proved to be the most effective of the different pheromone lures. Grouping of the pheromones resulted in a synergistic response, while combining the pseudostem did not enhance trap efficacy. The different plant material traps and the control were usually equally effective in catching weevils. Plant material traps caught greater numbers of fecund females, but pheromone traps captured a higher proportion of females. Treatment effects were much less pronounced in summer, and compared to a pseudostem trap, pitfall traps were the most efficacious during spring. Compared to conventional pseudostem trapping, Pheromone A pitfall traps should be optimally applied during spring in South Africa.

The sweet potato weevil (SPW), Cylas formicarius, is a serious pest of sweet potato in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Ten strains of Metarhizium sp. isolated from Australian soil samples were evaluated for their growth characteristics and screened for virulence to adult SPW under laboratory conditions. All isolates except QD62 (48.6%) had moderate to high germination (66 -97%), and all took 2 to 4 days to sporulate at 25 8C. The optimal temperature for radial growth for the majority of isolates was 30 8C, and there was a significant interaction between isolate and temperature (P , 0.05). Isolate QS155 showed the fastest radial growth at 30 8C. The internal transcribed spacer sequences showed slight variations among the isolates; however, all isolates were shown to be Metarhizium anisopliae. Isolates varied greatly in their virulence. At 10 days after inoculation (DAI) by immersion in a suspension of 1 £ 10 7 conidia/ml, 9 of the 10 isolates were virulent, causing 80-100% mortality of adult SPW. Only two isolates (QS001-6 and QS155) caused more than 50% mortality at 5 DAI. In dose-mortality bioassays, isolate QS155 had the lowest 20-day LC 50 and LC 90 values; however, there were no statistically significant differences in mortality among the three most promising isolates tested (QD66, QS001-6 and QS155). These results show that M. anisopliae isolate QS155 has potential as a microbial control agent for SPW, and that further evaluation under glasshouse and field conditions is warranted.

Abstract-Infochemicals play an important role in the biology of many insect species. An understanding of their role in plant-herbivore-carnivore interactions can be used in the development of tools for the enhancement of environmentally benign alternatives to synthetic pesticides. This review discusses how chemical information mediates ecological interactions between organisms and the role of infochemicals in integrated pest management. Infochemicals can be used in pest monitoring and in pest control, through mating disruption, mass trapping and to aggregate herbivores at delivery sites for biological control agents. Particular emphasis is placed on the potential of using pheromones and kairomones in the management of the banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a pest in plantations of East African highland banana and plantain in most banana-growing regions of the world. Cosmopolites sordidus produces an aggregation pheromone that attracts both males and females. This pheromone has been identified and synthesised and is being recommended as an effective agent in the trapping and control of the weevil. The synergism between banana plant extracts (kairomones) and the synthetic pheromone in attracting C. sordidus should be better exploited. Future research areas that can provide information for the development of an infochemical-based trapping system for the management of C. sordidus are discussed.Key Words: infochemicals, kairomones, aggregation pheromone, Coleoptera, banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus, biological control, pathogenic fungi, predators, synergism Résumé-Les sémiochimiques jouent un rôle important dans la biologie de beaucoup d'espèces d'insectes. La compréhension de leurs rôles dans les interactions plante-herbivore-carnivore peutêtre utilisée pour le développement d'outils destinés à améliorer les techniques de luttes alternatives aux pesticides de synthèse. Cet article montre comment l'information chimique agit sur les interactions écologiques entre organismes et, discute du rôle des infochimiques dans la gestion intégrée des ravageurs. Les sémiochimiques peuvent être utilisés pour surveiller et contrôler les ravageurs, à l'aide de la technique de la confusion sexuelle et du piégeage de masse et pour rassembler les ravageurs en un lieu donné pour les agents de lutte biologique.
