Organophosphate Pesticide Urinary Metabolites Among Latino Immigrants

Abstract: Background This analysis documents detections and concentrations of the six dialkylphosphate (DAP) urinary metabolite of organophosphorus (OP) pesticides among North Carolina Latino migrant farmworkers, with comparison to non-farmworker Latino immigrants. Methods Participants provided up to 4 urine samples during the 2012 and 2013 agricultural seasons. Composite urine samples for each year were analyzed. Results DAP urinary metabolite detections were similar in farmworkers and non-farmworker; e.g., for 201… Show more

“…These results extend comparisons of the OP DAP metabolites between male farmworkers and non-farmworkers. 9 In that analysis, although farmworkers often had more detections and higher concentrations among the six OP DAPs, the levels of detections and concentrations were also high among the Latino male non-farmworkers. This indicates that Latino non-farmworker immigrants are commonly exposed to OP pesticides.…”

“…68 Recent analyses of the OP DAP metabolites indicate that Latino immigrant non-farmworkers also have high levels of detection and concentration for these metabolites, 5,9 indicating that they experience exposure to OP pesticides similar to that of Latino farmworkers. These vulnerable US non-farmworker Latino populations had DAP metabolite concentrations higher than non-agricultural comparison groups in studies conducted outside of the US.…”

“…Farmworkers involved in tending or picking crops are routinely exposed to a broad range of residual pesticides [3740], as are their family members [1, 4143]. The present exploratory study in partnership with a Latino farmworker community validated a new approach to study pesticide exposures and their biological effects in children.…”

“…Efforts have been focused on finding safer pesticides for the home (e.g., the replacement of organophosphates and organochlorines with plant-based or synthetic pyrethroids), although even these newer compounds are under scrutiny for suspected allergic and asthmatic outcomes [19,48,49]. Efforts have also been focused on reducing pesticide residue track-in from harsher pesticides used agriculturally, and providing other protective measures for Latino farmworkers and their children [50]. …”
