MgO-supported platinum and platinum-molybdenum catalysts were prepared from organometallic precursors and characterized structurally to determine how the nature of the bimetallic precursors and the treatment conditions affected the interaction between the two metals. Samples were prepared from [PtCl 2 (PhCN) 2 ], [PtCl 2 (PhCN) 2 ] + [Mo(CO) 6 ], and {Pt[Mo(CO) 3 (C 5 H 5 )] 2 (PhCN) 2 } and characterized by infrared and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopies, transmission electron microscopy, and chemisorption of H 2 , CO, and O 2 . The samples were treated in H 2 at 400°C prior to most of the characterizations. Incorporation of Mo reduced the chemisorption of CO and of H 2 . EXAFS spectra measured at the Pt L III edge and at the Mo K edge showed substantial Pt-Mo contributions with a Pt-Mo coordination number of about 2 and an average distance of 2.63 Å for the sample prepared from {Pt[Mo(CO) 3 (C 5 H 5 )] 2 (PhCN) 2 }. In contrast, no significant Pt-Mo contribution was observed for the sample prepared from [PtCl 2 (PhCN) 2 ] + [Mo(CO) 6 ]. Electron micrographs and EXAFS results show that interaction between Pt and Mo ions in the former sample helped to maintain the platinum in a highly dispersed form, with supported platinum clusters being smaller than about 10 Å.

Heterometallic platinum complexes cover a huge field, as shown by a recent survey covering the crystallographic and structural data of almost 1500 examples. About 5% of those complexes exists as isomers and are summarized in this review; except one cis-trans example, the remainder are distortion isomers. These are discussed in terms of the coordination about the platinum atom, and correlations are drawn between donor atom, bond lengths and interbond angles, with attention to trans effect and metal-metal bonds. Distortion isomers, differing only by degree of distortion in Pt-L and Pt-M distances and L-M-L bond angles, spread over a wide range of oxidation states of platinum: zero, þ1, þ2 (most common) and þ4. The mean Pt-Pt bond distance elongate with increase in oxidation state of platinum: 2.705 Å (Pt(0)-Pt(0)) 5 2.720 Å (Pt(I)-Pt(I)) 5 2.773 Å (Pt(II)-Pt(II)). The shortest mean Pt-M bond distances are: Pt(0)-Ga ¼ 2.37 Å ; Pt(I) ¼ Au 2.697 Å , Pt(II)-Fe ¼ 2.625 Å and Pt(IV)-Sn, 2.580 Å .
