Organochlorine pesticides (OCs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in sediments and crabs (Chasmagnathus granulata, Dana, 1851) from mangroves of Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil

Abstract: Organochlorinated compounds, seven indicator PCB congeners, DDT and its main metabolites, were determined in sediment and crab (Chasmagnathus granulata) samples collected from mangrove areas near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Samples were analysed according to the FAO/SIDA protocols using continuous non-polar solvent extraction and a conventional GC-ECD apparatus. The highest levels of total PCB congeners and total DDT metabolites in sediments (184.16 and 37.40 ng.g −1 d.w. respectively) and crab eggs (570.62 and 98… Show more

“…RDDTs concentrations observed in this study (0.78-35 ng/g ww) were higher than those in mangrove biota (0.17-6.8 ng/g ww) from Singapore (Bayen et al, 2005), but were lower than those of crabs (6.5-98 ng/g dw) from mangrove forests of Guanabara Bay, Brazil (de Souza et al, 2008). Relatively higher levels of RDDTs in biota species from the PRE may be related to extensive applications of DDT in the PRD.…”

“…Mangrove sediments can act as sinks for varieties of man-made pollutants (Vane et al, 2009;Zhang et al, 2014). To date, several studies have been conducted on PCBs, DDTs and PBDEs contamination in mangrove sediments (Zheng et al, 2000;de Souza et al, 2008;Zhu et al, 2014;Zhang et al, 2015), however, little information on bioaccumulation and biomagnification of these HOPs, especially for PBDEs, DP and DBDPE, in mangrove ecosystems, could be found in literature.…”

“…PCBs 153 and 138 assume the role of predominant contaminants in marine organisms' tissues and sediments (Kamman et al, 1992;Turrio Baldassarri et al, 1993;Thompson et al, 1999;Bayarri et al, 2001;de Souza et al, 2008;Ssebugere et al, 2014). Sediments are home to a wide variety of aquatic life.…”

“…Previous studies in Brazil focused on determining the residues of DDT, PCBs, and PBDEs in different environmental matrices, e.g., sharks, cetaceans, fish, sediment, and crabs from mangroves and even in human breast adipose tissue (de Azevedo e Silva et al 2009;Dorneles et al 2009;Quinete et al 2011;de Souza et al 2008;Kalantzi et al 2009). However, little light was put on the presence of more unusual organohalogen compounds in this area and new types of anthropogenic POPs (Paasivirta 2000) as well as halogenated natural products (HNPs) (Vetter 2006).…”
