PurposeBusiness process reengineering (BPR) is a management improvement tool that entails radical changes to organizations' core processes, culture and legacy systems. Although BPR initiatives are favored by many mangers, employees on the other hand, perceive BPR as a potential threat to lose their jobs. This research aims to enhance the employee perception toward BPR implementation in the construction industry as BPR asks for job enlargement (number of different tasks) and enrichment (degree of responsibility) and doesn’t target the workforce downsizing by itself.Design/methodology/approachThe research is conducted in Saudi Arabia by involving experienced construction industry practitioners in a survey questionnaire and semi-structured interviews to gain an insightful perception toward BPR constituents. BPR asks for job enlargement (number of different tasks) and enrichment (degree of responsibility). The survey questionnaire is verified from the literature related to BPR and pilot study through experienced construction practitioners. The experts validated the findings.FindingsThe findings of this research reveal a general positive acceptance toward BPR constituents in construction industry. Jobs enrichment and enlargement should be approached: by integrating IT with business functions (especially communication); developing flexible management systems; and encouraging and empowering employees to generate value through their jobs with more delegated authority.Originality/valueThe work is one of the few studies to address the concept of Business Process Reengineering in the construction industry. We explore two research questions as detailed in the submission (BPR perception in the construction industry, and how to have a successful BPR by job enlargement and enrichment. The methods can be extended to other industries and in different parts in the world.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to answer the research question “Is the high-performance organization (HPO) Framework suitable for non-governmental private sector organizations, specifically the affiliates of international companies operating in the ICT sector in Egypt?” Design/methodology/approach The research concerns a replication study in which the HPO Questionnaire was used to collect data, and factor analysis was applied to evaluate the reliability and consistency of the HPO Framework. The research approach was the same as applied by de Waal et al. (2016), but this time the research population consisted of affiliates of international ICT companies, instead of local ICT companies as in the de Waal et al. (2016) study. Findings Data gathered by means of the HPO Questionnaire from managers of these affiliates were used to evaluate the reliability and internal consistency of the HPO Framework. The confirmatory factor analysis was done twice, once for the original 35-characteristic HPO Framework and once for the 26-characteristic HPO Framework as proposed by de Waal et al. (2016) for Egyptian local ICT companies. The study results clearly show the applicability of the original 35-characteristic HPO Framework for measuring the organizational strength and identifying performance-gaps of ICT companies that are affiliates of international organizations operating in Egypt. Originality/value This study adds to the growing HPO literature on developing countries and helps Egyptian ICT companies to adopt high-performance practices to be able to contribute more to the economic development of Egypt.

Μέσα από την εξελικτική πορεία της ΔΑΔ (Διαχείρισης του Ανθρώπινου Δυναμικού) φαίνεται ότι οι παράγοντες διαμόρφωσής της επηρεάζονται τόσο από τα άτομα λήψης και υλοποίησης των αποφάσεων όσο και από τις συνθήκες που επικρατούν στο εξωτερικό περιβάλλον στο οποίο δραστηριοποείται η επιχείρηση. Καταλυτικής σημασίας για την σύγχρονη θεώρηση της ΔΑΔ διαδραμάτισε ο προσδιορισμός του ΑΔ, κατά τα τέλη της δεκαετίας του '90, ως Ανθρώπινου Κεφαλαίου. Πολλοί ερευνητές, θεωρούν ότι το Ανθρώπινο Κεφάλαιο περιλαμβάνει τη γνώση, τις δεξιότητες και ικανότητες που κατέχουν οι άνθρωποι και χρησιμοποιούνται από την επιχείρηση. Με βάση το παραπάνω πλαίσιο οδηγηθήκαμε στο να εντοπίσουμε βιβλιογραφικά τις δεξιότητες/χαρακτηριστικά και ικανότητες του ΑΔ καθώς και τις διαστάσεις που λαμβάνει υπόψη της η επιχείρηση είτε στην επιλογή και διατήρηση του προσωπικού είτε στη διαχείριση της καριέρας του σε περίοδο κρίσης, συγκεκριμενοποιώντας την περίοδο αυτή στο διάστημα 2010-2016 στο οποίο η Ελλάδα βίωσε μια έντονη και παρατεταμένη κρίση. Με βάση τα παραπάνω, διαρθρώθηκε ένα θεωρητικό μοντέλο το οποίο πραγματοποιήθηκε με βάση τον προσδιορισμό της «μετάλλαξης» που αναμένεται να συμβεί στο σύνολο των μεταβλητών που εντοπίστηκαν στη βιβλιογραφία αναφορικά με το τρίπτυχο Χαρακτηριστικά ΑΔ - Αμφίδρομη Σχέση Δέσμευσης ΑΔ και επιχειρήσεων - Ανάπτυξη Ανθρώπινου Κεφαλαίου, μέσα από την ανάδυση νέων «λανθανουσών» μεταβλητών λαμβάνοντας υπόψη και τους δύο πυλώνες της διαδικασίας αυτής, τις επιχειρήσεις αλλά και το ανθρώπινο δυναμικό τους, οι οποίες λαμβάνουν «δίπολη» ή «δίβουλη» μορφή. Συνεπώς διαμορφώνεται ένα νέο πλαίσιο πολιτικών και πρακτικών ΑΔ Τα αποτελέσματα δείχνουν τη διαμόρφωση δέκα εννέα νέων λανθανουσών μεταβλητών. Η ονοματοδοσία τους θα αναδιαμορφώσει τον τρόπο αντίληψης των στρατηγικών ανθρώπινου δυναμικού και θα βοηθήσει να κατανοηθεί η φύση και η μορφή των σχέσεων επιχείρησης και ανθρώπινου δυναμικού της. Η διαφοροποίηση των λανθανουσών μεταβλητών επηρεάζεται από ένα σύνολο παραμέτρων του επιχειρηματικού και επιχειρησιακού γίγνεσθαι. Οι επιχειρήσεις στην Ελλάδα έχοντας να αντιμετωπίσουν ένα διαρκώς μεταβαλλόμενο περιβάλλον, είτε σε επίπεδο αγοραίας πρακτικής (ισχυρός ανταγωνισμός με συνεχείς αλλαγές στις καταναλωτικές δαπάνες), είτε στο επίπεδο των διαρκών νομοθετικών αναπροσδιορισμών (μη σταθερό φορολογικό πλαίσιο), είτε στο επίπεδο της κουλτούρας (πολυσύνθετη και αναπροσδιοριζόμενη, εγκαταλείποντας ιδέες και πιστεύω παραδοσιακών αναπαραστάσεων και χωρίς να έχει ακόμα διαμορφωθεί ένα νέο αναγνωρίσιμο πλαίσιο) δεν έχουν ακόμη διαμορφώσει συγκεκριμένες αντιλήψεις (θέσεις) αντιμετώπισης της κρίσης αναφορικά με το ανθρώπινο δυναμικό τους αλλά διατηρούν αλληλοσυγκρουόμενες και αμφιθυμικές θέσεις και «διαθέσεις».
