Aim To explore healthful leadership practices in nursing and midwifery evident within the Covid‐19 pandemic in the UK, the contextual facilitators, barriers, and outcomes. Background Globally, the health and care sector are under pressure and despite nurses and other professionals demonstrating resilience and resourcefulness in the COVID‐19 pandemic, this has negatively impacted on their health and wellbeing and on patient care. Evaluation Two searches were conducted in July 2021 and December 2021. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were identified to refine the search, including papers written since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. A total of 38 papers were included principally from the USA and UK. 10 were research papers, the others were commentaries, opinion pieces and editorials. MS Teams literature repository was created. A unique critical appraisal tool was devised to capture contexts, mechanisms and outcomes whilst reflecting more standardised tools i.e., the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme and the Authority, Accuracy, Coverage, Objectivity and Date tool (AACOD) tool for reviewing grey literature to refine the search further. Key Issues Six tentative theories of healthful leadership emerged from the literature around leadership strategies which are relational, being visible and present; being open and engaging; caring for self and others; embodying values; being prepared and preparing others and u sing available information and support . Contextual factors that enable healthful leadership practices are in the main, created by leaders’ values, attributes, and style, as well as the culture within which they lead. The literature suggests leaders who embody values of compassion, empathy, courage, and authenticity create conditions for positive and healthful relations between leaders and others. Nurse and midwives’ voices are however absent from the literature in this review. Conclusion Current available literature would suggest healthful leadership practices are not prioritized by nurse leaders but the perspectives of nurses’ and midwives’ about the impact of such practices on their well‐being is missing. Tentative theories are offered as a means of identifying healthful leadership strategies, the context that enable these and potential outcomes for nurses an midwives. These will be explored in phase two of this study. Implications for nursing management Nurse leaders must be adequately prepared to create working environments that support nurses’ and midwives’ wellbeing, so that they may be able to provide high quality care. Aims and Objectives: To explore newly qualified nurses' support needs and their perceptions of online peer support. Background:The experience of being a newly qualified nurse is stressful and isolating. Support from colleagues and peers can enhance perceptions of competence and confidence in newly qualified nurses, improve well-being and aid retention. However, despite initiatives such as preceptorship, support needs may remain unmet in busy clinical environments. Online support has potential to offer a partial solution to professional isolation, but there is a lack of research into how technology can support nurses' emotional and social well-being.Design: A qualitative exploratory study was designed, employing semi-structured focus groups, analysed using thematic analysis. The study is reported in accordance with the COnsolidated criteria for REporting Qualitative research checklist.Methods: Eight focus groups, supplemented by one individual interview, were conducted with newly qualified nurses between June 2018-January 2019.Findings: Two main themes arose. The first was Drowning, a lot of the time with two subthemes: (i) Feelings and emotions about being a Newly Qualified Nurse: 'Absolutely terrified' and (ii) Support within the role: 'Somebody you can count on'. The second was Potential advantages and disadvantages of online modality: 'Somebody is going to get in that phone!' which included three sub-themes (i) Potential advantages, (ii) Potential disadvantages and (iii) Preferences and recommendations. Conclusions:This study demonstrates that if barriers can be overcome, then online support has potential to contribute to newly qualified nurses' well-being. Further research is needed to explore technical and ethical issues around online support and evaluate its effectiveness for newly qualified nurses. Relevance to clinical practice:Online support has the potential to add to existing strategies to support nurses during stressful times. Foundation courses at Level 3 tend to attract students from non-traditional backgrounds who find transitioning to Higher Education difficult and challenging. Students are encouraged to seek support through the University services which are often generic and unable to offer individual support. The Self-Empowerment Journey (the SEJ) is a novel meditative process of self-enquiry, which offers students the ability to respond positively to perceived difficult situations as they arise. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the SEJ process, in supporting students with their mental health and wellbeing, during their transition into Higher Education. Data was collected as part of a pilot, final year project and subsequent larger study comprising of 350 Foundation year students within the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing. The results from our studies indicate the SEJ has improved the students experience during their transitional year. Interestingly, workload, course success and progression were of the most concern amongst the Foundation year students. Overall, this study has offered an insight into the effectiveness of the SEJ, as a preventative measure empowering the individual to better selfmanage themselves allowing them to thrive rather than survive during their University journey.
