Organizational adaptation to climate change: learning to anticipate energy disruptions

Abstract: Purpose-This paper aims to investigate how organizational learning (OL) affects the development of anticipatory adaptation to climate change in companies. Because the need to learn increases in circumstances of greater uncertainty such as the case of climate change, one of the processes that can explain different levels of anticipatory adaptation to climate change (AACC) by companies is OL. Design/methodology/approach-The research uses a case study design. Following the procedures of qualitative sampling, an e… Show more

“…Information distribution is the sharing of knowledge to understand existing and future phenomena; information distribution makes the learning process effective [42]. Employees interpret this information at the individual, team, and organizational levels to understand and clarify how the obtained information can influence a firm's future strategy [31]. Organizational memory means recalling and storing knowledge for the firm's future use [43].…”

“…When AACC was in its early stages of development within a company, there was no budget for such an issue, and access to specific and complex knowledge was feasible only by participating in the CoP. Therefore, access to technical expertise and computer capacity, which are fundamental for downscaling macro-climatic projections (Orsato et al, 2017), was facilitated by the CoP, as stated by P5: You can do nothing without INPE (National Institute for Space Research [www.inpe.br]), in terms of future weather forecasts. “…Strategies for Anticipatory Adaptation to Climate Change (AACC), however, require differentiated organizational learning processes. Overall, there is a limitation when it comes to obtaining scientific data, which is also hard to translate into useful information for decision making (Orsato, Barakat, & Campos, 2017).…”
