Organization and Desorganization of Short Range Structures in Swallow‐Tailed Liquid Crystals

Abstract

Swallow‐tailed liquid crystals are antiparallel oriented in the short range‐order. The organization and destruction of this order was studied by addition of other swallow‐tailed molecules, molecules with lateral substitution, a double swallow‐tailed and a rod‐like component. Induction and destruction of liquid crystalline phases was investigated by phase diagrams and dielectric methods. This survey contains new experimental data as well as for comparison already published results. It is a good example for the importance of geometrical relations for the formation of the liquid crystalline state.
