Kinetic resolution of the anhydride of racemic ( I ) with (-)-a-phenethylamine (in dry pyridine at 0 "C) affords the dextrorotatory acid in 6.5 % optical yield 14~51; the absolute configuration of ( + ) -( I ) has been established as (1s) [ Esterification of (2) with alcohols in the presence of a tertiary amine leads to good yields of bis (chloromethy1) 77, 6289 (1955).[2] K. Das Cyclobutadien 1 ist eine sehr sauerstoffempfindliche Verbindung. Die Strukturen der drei bei der Autoxidation entstehenden Hauptprodukte 3,4 und 7 und des Nebenprodukts 9 wurden aufgeklart. Ein Mechanismus fur die Bildung dieser Produkte wird diskutiert. The cyclobutadiene 1 is extremely sensitive towards oxygen. The structures of the three main products 3,4. and 7 and of the by-product 9, formed by autoxidation. were elucidated. A mechanism is discussed for the formation of these products.Die Isolierung des Cyclobutadiens 1's2), das in erster Linie durch sterische Effekte kinetisch stabilisiert ist, ermuglicht eine eingehende und umfassende Untersuchung der Reaktionen des weitgehend elektronisch unverfalschten Cyclobutadien-Systems unter definierten Bedingungen, ohne Konkurrenz mit der bei den meisten CyclobutadienDerivaten eintretenden Dimerisierung befiirchten zu miissen.Die erstaunlichste Reaktion von 1 ist die auljerst rasche Umsetzung mit Sauerstoff: Schon kiirzeste Zeit nach Einleiten von Luft oder Sauerstoff in seine LUsung ist 1 nicht mehr nachzuweisen; dies I a t sich auch visuell sehr leicht an der Enthrbung der gelben Losung von 1 erkennen, da die Oxidationsprodukte farblos sind. Die Darstellung1~2) und Umsetzungen von 1, wie auch von anderen durch grolje Substituenten kinetisch stabilisierten CycIob~tadienen'-~), mit anderen Reagenzien konnen daher nur unter strengstem Luftausschlulj durchgefiihrt werden.

Phosphorus‐aziridinyl compounds, which may be good crosslinking agents for biological as well as chemical‐technical systems, have been synthesized by the reaction of phosphorus oxychloride (or the corresponding thio‐compound) with diols and diamines and treatment of the resulting products with aziridine. The chemical reactivity of the tetra‐aziridides so obtained, their infrared and their nuclear magnetic resonance spectra have been studied.
