Summary Studies on the presence of cholinesterase in the blood and serum of domestic animals (ox, sheep, goat, horse, pig and dog) and the effects on it of contact insecticides (Metasystox and Diazinon) The significance for clinical chemistry of studying the cholinesterase in the blood or serum, particularly in the diagnosis of injury due to particular contact insecticides, is indicated. Manometric studies were carried out on the normal levels for cholinesterase in the blood and serum of domestic animals, and the following were the mean values (expressed in cholinesterase units) according to Ammon and Zapp. There exist among the animals studied, as is the case in man, wide physiological variations. By adding Metasystox (dimethyl‐ethylmerkapto‐ethylthiophosphate) or Diazinon (thiophosphoric acid‐[2‐isopropyl‐4‐methyl‐pyrimidyl‐6]‐diethylester) it was possible to demonstrate in vitro a complete or very considerable inhibition of the cholinesterase in the blood and serum of domestic animals.
