Organically Linking Green Development and Ecological Environment Protection in Poyang Lake, China Using a Social-Ecological System (SES) Framework

Abstract: Wetlands are unique ecosystems formed by the interaction between land and water on Earth. Poyang Lake, which is a part of China’s largest freshwater lake wetland, is well known for its ecological and economic importance. This study uses a social-ecological system (SES) framework that integrates watershed and human activities; we used action scenarios to analyse the influencing factors, solutions, and feedback mechanisms involved in the SES framework. We chose Nanchang, Jiujiang, and Shangrao in the Poyang Lake… Show more

“…Therefore, the government's environmental subjective administrative responsibility depends on the government staff's subjective consciousness of environmental responsibility, and the government's environmental subjective administrative responsibility is a subjective feeling, conscious recognition, and active practice of the government administrator. “…There is a large amount of concentrated continuous cropland around, and urban development and construction threaten the surrounding ecological and production space. In addition, the reduction of ecological space area and landscape fragmentation are partly attributed to the anthropogenic enclosure of lakes, uncontrolled sand mining, and farming [67], in which some lake resources are converted into cropland resources to promote agricultural development while excessive enclosure often damages the lake natural resources and destroys lake environments and storage functions [68].…”

“…The transformed area from woodland to construction land was reduced. At the same time, Chinese government has begun to pay attention to environmental protection and has adopted "green development" as an important concept for long-term economic and social development [46,47]. A prime example is that "clear waters and green mountains are as valuable as gold and silver" has been written into China's central government documents [48].…”

“…With the rapid development of China's economy after the 1980s, the intensification of urbanization lead to the transformation of large distributed forests and paddy fields into a variety of land-use types with small patches [26,57]. After 2015, China began to implement new environmental protection policies such as "Beautiful Countryside Construction" and "Rural Tourism" [46,47]. As a result, the area of green land began to increase, resulting in a decreasing trend of NP, PD, ED, LSI and SHDI.…”
