Organic Soiling: The Role of Pollen in PV Module Performance Degradation

Abstract: Soiling is a problem for solar energy harvesting technologies, such as in photovoltaic modules technologies. This paper describes not only one complete year of Soiling Ratioindex and rates measured in a rural environment of Southern Europe, but also focuses on the seasonal variation of the type of soiling, mainly spring and summer. The Soiling Ratio index is calculated based on the maximum power output and short circuit current of two photovoltaic (PV) panels, along with Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy… Show more

“…Another problem in PV system performance is soiling on the modules. Conceição et al [12] presented the effect of soiling in Alentejo and Évora in Portugal on PV performance, and discussed the seasonal variation and the type of soiling. Sand from the Sahara was identified as soiling, in addition to pollen, especially in spring.…”

“…Soiling can easily cause more than 1% power loss per day [1][2][3][4] and is a site-specific phenomenon, strongly influenced by local climatic conditions. 1,[5][6][7][8][9][10][11] The predominant type of contamination could change considerably depending on the location: mineral dust deposits 1 (Figure 1A), bird droppings ( Figure 1B), biofilms of bacteria, algae, lichen, mosses, or fungi [12][13][14] ( Figure 1C), plant debris or pollen 15 (Figure 1D), engine exhausts or industry emissions ( Figure 1E), and agricultural emissions such as feed dusts ( Figure 1F).…”

“…In addition to dust, there can be other issues such as natural pollens affecting the performance of the PVs. Conceição et al [22] studied the soiling ratio index in a rural environment of Southern Europe by calculating the maximum power output and short circuit current of two photovoltaic (PV) panels. Their results show a soiling rate of 4.1%/month in April, 1.9%/month in July and 1.6%/month in September.…”
