“…PAHs) (Merhaby et al, 2015;Wolska et al, 2014). Our results showed a linear correlation between PCB153 and S 16 PAHs concentrations (R 2 ¼ 0.83, p < 0.01), suggesting similar sources of emission.…”

“…Watercourses and rivers constantly receive various kind of organic contaminants from municipal, hospital and industrial wastewaters, agricultural effluents and nonpoint source pollution. To date, various watercourses, lakes, rivers, estuaries and seas have been contaminated by a wide range of organic substances including the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) (Boonyatumanond et al, 2006;Merhaby et al, 2015;Net et al, 2014aNet et al, , 2014bNet et al, , 2015a. Polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic and persistent in the environment.…”

“…In comparison to other sampling points with shipbuilding activity in Port Ningbo, such as Point S01, S13, S16, S19, and S20, the port near Point S10 has a longer history of shipbuilding, and especially of ship repair, discharging nontreated wastes (containing related organic pollutants and metals) into the harbor (Table 2b). The ranges of ΣPAHs and ΣPCBs in surface sediment of this investigation were similar to results from Tripoli Harbor in Lebanon, 243-2965 mg ΣPAHs kg −1 and 18-302 mg ΣPCBs kg −1 , respectively, which were dominated by 4-and 5-ring PAHs and 4-to 6-chlorinated PCB congeners (Merhaby et al, 2015). Surface sediments from urbanized Grand Canal in the Yangtze River Delta City Cluster, China (660-2200 mg ΣPAHs kg −1 and 0.5-93 mg ΣPCBs kg −1 ) had similar ranges as this investigation and coal-related ΣPAHs emissions being identified as the dominant source (Hong et al, 2012).…”

“…In Tripoli Harbor (Lebanon), 15 sites associated with different port operations or activities were sampled for persistent organic pollutants (PCBs, PAHs, and 18Me-PAHs), but variation in pollutants was not strongly linked to specific activities (Merhaby et al, 2015). There is a clear need to quantify how specific port operations, such as loading, unloading, and storage of cargos, handling of waste and maintenance activities influence sediment quality in ports and their surroundings.…”

“…Moreover, it is equally important to evaluate the biological adverse risks. Hence, comparisons with sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) are usually done (Bastami et al, 2015;Merhaby et al, 2015;Wang et al, 2015).…”
