Organic photovoltaic cells – promising indoor light harvesters for self-sustainable electronics

Abstract: Organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells using BTR:PC71BM show promising power conversion efficiency of >28% under 1000 lux generating 78.2 μW cm−2, outperforming Si based PV cells and comparable to GaAs PV cells. This result suggests that OPV cells have excellent potential for indoor applications.

“…[3,50] Morphologies of BCP and [BMIM]BF 4 were characterized using a polarized optical microscope (Leica, DM4000M). The lux levels of the fluorescence lamps were measured using a luxmeter, (LX-1330B) and the intensity calibration was carried out following the previous reports.…”

“…A schematic of perovskite decomposition detected by GIXRD is illustrated in Figure 4d. In contrast, no PbI 2 peak was observed in the aged sample of CH 3 Figure 5a-e and f-j shows the polarized optical microscope images of BCP and [BMIM]BF 4 films, respectively, with varied degradation time from 0 to 420 s in air. From the 2D GIXRD profiles as shown in Figure 4e,f, an obvious PbI 2 phase appeared after two weeks aging.…”

“…They not only have promising potential to be much lower cost than the silicon PV cells, but also have significantly better indoor performance. Indeed, for dye‐sensitized PV cells and organic PV cells, P max up to 17.5 and 14.6 μW cm −2 under 200 lux, and 101 and 78 μW cm −2 under 1000 lux have been shown, respectively …”
