“…OCs not detected (n.d.) are indicated for the bivalve species. C-values show food associated with settling, pelagic phytoplankton (Lovvorn et al, 2005;Søreide et al, 2006a Søreide et al, 2006a), which is reflected in the isotopic values of the bivalves . During the year of sampling, Kongsfjorden had very limited sea ice coverage, whereas the sea ice in Liefdefjorden retreated just 2.5 weeks before the sampling of bivalves.…”

“…Accordingly, ice algae were an unlikely food source for the bivalves in Kongsfjorden. Higher C of POM have been shown to change due to degradation processes such as grazing on settling POM or bacterial degradation of deposited POM when it reaches the sea floor (Lehmann et al, 2002;Lovvorn et al, 2005). Furthermore, stable isotope analyses showed also different d 15 N-values among the species, revealing a higher trophic level for C. islandica compared to the other species.…”

“…This fosters an intense bloom at the ice edge. However, following ice retreat, wind mixing is sometimes sufficient to break down the density stratification imparted by the fresh meltwater (e.g., Lovvorn et al, 2005;Niebauer et al, 1990Niebauer et al, , 1995 and limit continued open water PP. The second phase of PP occurs when solar radiation stabilizes the water column enough to support an open-water bloom.…”

“…Those consumers include deposit-feeding Holothuroidea Molpadia musculus and Ypsilocucumis turricata (d 13 C = -18.35 ± 0.87 % and -18.88 ± 0.28 %, respectively; Mincks et al 2008) and suspension-feeding Anthozoa (d 13 C up to -16 %; Nyssen et al 2002). Important 13 C enrichment of benthic consumers, including bivalves and sea urchins, has also been recorded in Arctic ecosystems (Hobson and Welch 1992;Lovvorn et al 2005). This phenomenon is usually linked with direct or indirect assimilation of detrital organic material reworked by sediment microorganisms and/or meiofauna.…”
