Organic matter mineralization in sediment of a coastal freshwater lake and response to salinization

Abstract: Solid phase and pore water chemical data collected in a sediment of the Haringvliet Lake are interpreted using a multi-component reactive transport model. This freshwater lake, which was formed as the result of a river impoundment along the southwestern coast of the Netherlands, is currently targeted for restoration of estuarine conditions. The model is used to assess the present-day biogeochemical dynamics in the sediment, and to forecast possible changes in organic carbon mineralization pathways and associat… Show more

“…Our results indicate that a sharp redox front develops over a short distance in the intertidal area due to the efficient removal of the reactant (NH 4 þ ) as soon as it comes in contact with O 2 . The computed rates are higher than those reported for freshwater lake sediments (7 Â 10 À9 mol N m À2 s À1 ; Canavan et al, 2006) and shallow coastal marine sediments (3.6 Â 10 À9 mol N m À2 s À1 ; Wang and Van Cappellen, 1996).…”

“…AVS has been analysed by extraction on shallow sediments from lakes within the river Rhine system (Van den Berg et al, 2001;Van Griethuysen et al, 2003, 2004Canavan et al, 2006Canavan et al, , 2007, recent river sediments ( Van den Berg et al, 1999;Poot et al, 2007;Thomas, 2007), floodplains (Poot et al, 2007) and temporarily inundated wetlands (Van den Berg et al, 1998;Table 14). AVS extractions have been interpreted in terms of non-pyritic reduced sulphur in the references cited.…”

“…Initial SO 4 concentration does not appear to be a controlling factor. The early diagenesis of sulphides is hard to explain quantitatively by geochemical transport modelling of the S chemistry; the same applies to explaining the AVS contents as part of the total, aqua regia-soluble S contents (Canavan et al, 2006(Canavan et al, , 2007.…”

“…Most of the values were constrained from literature studies, following the general procedure adopted in similar modelling exercises (e.g. Van Cappellen and Wang, 1996;Canavan et al, 2006). Those denoted as "fitting parameters" were obtained by trial and error by fitting the model to the field data.…”
