Molecular systems encompassing more than one photochromic entity can be used to build highly functional materials, thanks to their potential multi-addressability and/or multi-response properties. Over the last decade, the synthesis and spectroscopic and kinetic characterisation as well as the modeling of a wide range of multiphotochromes have been achieved in a field that is emerging as a distinct branch of photochemistry. In this review, we provide an overview of the available multiphotochromic compounds which use a variety of photoactive building blocks, e.g., diarylethene, azobenzene, spiropyran, naphthopyran or fulgimide derivatives. Their efficiency in terms of multi-responsiveness is discussed and several strategies to circumvent the most common limitation (i.e., the loss of photochromism of one part) are described.

Für das Ermitteln von Struktur‐Funktions‐Beziehungen, deren Kenntnis zum Verständnis der Eigenschaften hochmolekularer linear π‐konjugierter Polymere beiträgt, haben sich monodisperse Oligomere als äußerst nützlich erwiesen. Eine große Vielfalt spektakulärer molekularer Architekturen wurde entwickelt, wobei derzeit ein Höhepunkt mit der Herstellung von über 10 nm langen molekularen Drähten wie 1 als potentiellen Bausteinen für die molekulare Elektronik erreicht ist.

A series of platinum(II) di-yne complexes with the general formula [PhPt(PR3)2-C≡C-X-C≡C-Pt(PR3)2Ph] where R = Et, nBu and X = a range of extended hetero-aromatic spacer groups, have been prepared by the coupling reaction between two molar equivalents of [PhPt(PR3)2Cl] and one molar equivalent of the terminal dialkyne, HC≡C-X-C≡CH, in the presence of CuI catalyst. The complexes have been characterised by IR, NMR and optical spectroscopy. These materials, which are precursors to related platinum(II) poly-yne polymers, have been specifically designed to be incorporated into metal-molecule-metal junctions in nanoelectronic devices.
