Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Filters Based on Dendritic and Cyclodextrin “Nanosponges” for the Removal of Organic Pollutants from Water

Abstract: Long-alkyl chain functionalized poly(propylene imine) dendrimer, poly(ethylene imine) hyperbranched polymer, and beta-cyclodextrin derivatives, which are completely insoluble in water, have the property of encapsulating organic pollutants from water. Ceramic porous filters can be impregnated with these compounds resulting in hybrid organic/ inorganic filter modules. These hybrid filter modules were tested for the effective purification of water, by continuous filtration experiments, employing a variety of wate… Show more

“…Dendrimers and other branched macromolecules based on the bis-benzyl amine AB 2 monomer have the potential for unique properties and applications involving encapsulation, host-guest complexation, and waste water remediation. 19 Studies are underway to explore further the formation of dendrimers and other hyperbranched macromolecules containing the bis-benzyl amine motif, and these structures will be exploited for the removal of common environmental pollutants.…”

“…These nanoparticles circulate into the body until they encounter the surface of the tumor cell, where they adhere to the surface and start to release the drug in a controlled and predictable manner. [7] The targeted drug delivery systems of this type have several basic advantages. As the drug is released at the tumor site instead of circulating widely through the body, it should be more effective for a given dosage form.…”

“…18,19 The immobilization of cyclodextrin in nanosponges and nanocomposites makes them suitable for cleaning contaminated waters. 20,21 Moreover, the preparation of fibers and membranes with linked cyclodextrin allows for the extraction of some organic compounds from urine samples, 22,23 water samples 24-29 or soil samples. 30 Recently, we designed samplers for determining volatile organic compounds in air samples based on the use of a solid-phase containing immobilized cyclodextrin.…”
