This paper presents a battery-aware stochastic control framework for residential energy management systems (EMS) equipped with energy harvesting, that is, photovoltaic panels, and storage capabilities. The model and control rationale takes into account the dynamics of load, the weather, the weather forecast, the utility, and consumer preferences into a unified Markov decision process. The embedded optimization problem is formulated to determine the proportion of energy drawn from the battery and the grid to minimize a cost function capturing a user-defined tradeoff between battery degradation and financial expense by user preferences. Numerical results are based on real-world weather data for Golden, Colorado, and load traces. The results illustrate the ability of the system to limit battery degradation assessed using the Rain flow counting method for lithium ion batteries.

The IEEE Access journal started in 2013, and in a short period, it has attained recognition for being a preferred multidisciplinary journal, with characteristics of rapid and continuous publishing. It is now ranked among the top journals in Engineering and Computer Science (General) by Scopus. Recognizing the distinctive nature of the journal and its contributions in the broader area of Engineering and Computer Science, this article attempts to present a detailed bibliometric analysis of the journal to identify publishing patterns, authorship and collaboration structure, citation impact, funding patterns of the published research, and the thematic structure of the publication. The gender distribution is also computed to identify papers published by male and female authors. The social media visibility of the articles and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) connections of articles were also identified. The results indicate that the IA journal can attract novel, high-quality multidisciplinary research, which aligns with the relevant and the most pressing SDGs. Furthermore, the journal has experienced increased multi-authored multidisciplinary research, and it is publishing a more significant percentage of articles with female first authors.

Graphene and related materials have been employed in several applications till date due to the unique set of properties. Research in the area of organic solar cells and smart windows are important to meet the increasing global energy demands and to realize the future goal of zero energy buildings. Here, we present a summary of the important research progress in application of graphene and related materials in organic solar cells and smart windows. This review starts by introducing the need of photovoltaic technology including organic solar cells and smart windows. The remaining sections are broadly divided into two sections – the first one briefly introduces organic cells and their different types, and the next section focuses on the different chromogenic technologies used in smart windows. After a brief overview of graphene, the application of graphene and related materials in organic cells and smart windows are presented. In the end, some of the major challenges and possible research directions are also outlined. Hopefully, this review will shed light on the recent trends and directions to achieve enhancement in performance of organic solar cells and smart windows with integration of graphene and provide overview for researchers about this novel field.
